Recover data from old C drive (win xp)

I have an old C drive from which I would like to recover data files. Apparently I can't boot with two C drives on the system. How can I access such a data file?

You should be able to connect your old C drive to a working computer and it will be assigned a new drive letter, you can then copy files from it.

Further to what Stuart mentions, this is a reasonably easy and common thing to do. If the old hard disk still has an operating system on it you can do a thing called Slaving

It is a bit fiddly if you haven't done it before but when you do this, your PC should see it as another drive and you can copy it across to your main C: drive.

If you are not too keen to do it yourself I know it is a service done by any good PC Retail store

Get yourself a USB2 to IDE adapter. This will allow you to connect the drive to a USB port and then simply transfer whatever data you want to your existing HD or burn it to a CD or DVD. No need to crack your case open to slave a HD. HTH

Glad to be of (inadvertent) assistance Skitter.

edited by Doc to add.... That's exactly how I felt when I came across it. I bought 3 and gave the extras to friends. Very handy little piece of gear.

I only needed one adapter but I also decided to get another USB hub while I was at it - got to keep the economy rolling along! Thanks again for sharing this information!

Excellent idea, funnily enough we had a crashed laptop handed to us last week and as a "lunch time exercise" we dismantled an "old" USB external drive and put the laptop's hard drive in it, worked a treat. Baby and Family photos and a thesis recovered for a colleague Oh yes, and a case of beer for my colleague and I

I was actually going to suggest this as an alternative to Doc's solution. If the future suggests the need for an external USB HD for backup etc. then you're already on your way! I'm using two now - one for backup, the other for multimedia/ DVD processing... best thing since sliced bread IMO and so cheap now.

Re: Recover data from old C drive (win xp)

Alan,

I already had 4 external drive enclosures, all with HDs in them and used for backups of the different family computers, when I came across this little gizmo a couple years ago. I knew that I could simply attach a HD, sit it down just about anywhere as long as the surface was non-conductive, and use it as if it were in an enclosure from watching my local PC wizard do work before I knew how myself. This is cheaper and faster than using an enclosure. But definitely not a long term solution.

I see your point. I might get one and justify its purchase with my "just to have one" criterion.

Re: Recover data from old C drive (win xp)

Doc,
A great find. That USB2 to IDE adapter works fine. I ordered one and got it in 3 days. I have about 5 old PC boxes around just in case there is something on those HDs that I may need. Now all I need is the HD from each. The boxes will then be recycled and I gain storage space.
Thanks for the info on that small piece of hardware.

Bob,

Glad you found the tip useful. A big plus that you are recycling the old hardware.

I never thought of the added bonus of additional storage space. I'd thrown away the old hardware long ago and just kept the drives to recover the data.
