    Outlook Configuring Office (2003)

I am configuring a new PC.

Old PC (XP Pro SP2) had Word 2003 and Outlook 2003 plus Word 2007. Word had been configured not to reregister when you switch versions. Done by adding a DWORD called NoRereg found in a reputable magazine and it worked fine for months. Outlook 2003 also ran without problems.

On the new PC (Vista) I first set it up with just Outlook 2003 and Word 2007. Every time I received emails, I got a message the Office was being configured and I got it for each email received. In Outlook, Word is not configured to be the editor.

Thinking perhaps Outlook 2003 was not going to play nicely with just Word 2007, I then uninstalled Office 2007, and installed Word 2003 and ran Outlook again. It receives emails without any reconfiguring messages. As soon as I reinstall Office 2007, Outlook popups a message that it is reconfiguring Office 2007 for every email it receives. I receive too many emails to make that acceptable.

It does that with or without the DWORD in the registry. I have tried with both Word 2003 and Word 2007 being the last run version, with and without the DWORD. With both versions of Word installed, Outlook always has to configure Word 2007 for each message.

    Any solutions please?

Do you have a compelling reason for wanting Word 2007?

Yes. It is the only version compatible with the current version of the main software that I use for my job! (Adobe RoboHelp 7).

OK, if so, what is the objection to using Office 2007 only?

    Re: Outlook Configuring Office (2003)

None whatever on my part. However before that was installed, I still got a configuration message for each read email. Unfortunately I cannot recall whether it said Reconfiguring 2003 or 2007. Perversely, I think it was 2003 when Word 2003 was not installed at that time.

Perhaps there were still traces of Office 2003 present. You didn't install Word and Outlook 2003 after Word 2007, didn't you? One should always install the oldest version first - see Information about using 2007 Office suites and programs on a computer that is running another version of Office.

If you want to keep only Office 2007, you could try uninstalling both versions, then make sure that no traces of either installation is left, and finally reinstall Office 2007.

    Re: Outlook Configuring Office (2003)

    Thanks Hans.

In the first instance Outlook 2003 was installed and then Office 2007. I added Word 2003 when Outlook 2003 started giving errors. At that point I had thus broken the oldest first rule. Subsequently though I uninstalled both and reinstalled in the correct order. However, as you indicate, there could be remains.

I think the procedure now is to uninstall both and then run a registry cleaner. After that I will install Outlook 2003 and Word 2003 and make sure the Outlook is behaving. Then I will install Word 2007 and apply the NoRereg DWORD, which I see is mentioned in the article. If it still fails, then I would guess the only answer is Outlook 2007?

    Thanks for you help.

I'd install only Office 2007 after the cleanup. That way you have no chance of conflicting versions any more.

    Re: Outlook Configuring Office (2003)

I decided the only really clean thing was a complete rebuild with restore points thereafter.

Did that and with Word 2003 and Office 2003 it was AOK. Then reboot and install Office 2007 and trouble comes back. They seem to be incompatible but on an XP machine, that combo works. It is only under Vista this problem occurs.

Guess I'll have to upgrade Outlook. Thanks for your advice.

It's not really a decision! I will speak to Microsoft after doing some more checking to see if there is a known Vista problem.

If I do find anything that will help anyone needing the same configuration, I will post back here.

    Re: Outlook Configuring Office (2003)

I finally found the answer! It is to install Office SP3. Being a new machine, it did not have all the updates. That was a task for yesterday and now Outlook 2003 is working sweetly with Office 2007.
