    Windows Folder Properites (Win XP, VB 6, VBA)

    Is it possible to add, then search on, Summary information (Title, Subject, Author, Category, Keywords and Comments) to folders? My goal is to search on archived folders vs files since all files will contain the same type of metadata.

    Thanks,
    John

    Others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see a way to create custom properties for a folder.
    You could create a text file with a fixed name in each folder and set its summary information, or you could store the summary information in the contents of the text file. You could also use the .ini file format.
    Perhaps you could use the FileSearch object from the Office object library to search, otherwise you'd have to write your own search code.

    There is a thread on the Security board about "alternate data streams," hidden metadata some programs attached to file or folders. Problem is, it is invisible to Windows Explorer and, presumably, any built-in search features of Office. You probably would need your own program to read any properties attached as alternate data streams.

    I don't think it would be a good idea to use alternate data streams for this purpose. Since malware producers are also starting to use them, it seems probable that the standard security programs will block access to them or even delete them in the future...

    You might get some mileage from NirExt v1.01 - add 3 useful context menu extensions to your Windows Explorer. It uses the Desktop.ini hidden file (creates one if not exist) and adds a section/ key for folder comment, like this:
    <code>
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    ConfirmFileOp=0
    IconIndex=0
    IconFile=
    InfoTip=Your folder comment
    </code>

    You could incorporate all the fields you want in a delimited string e.g. Title|Subject|Author|Category|Keywords|Comments.
    Your search facility could be a fairly simple VBS script file or VBA function.

    Thanks to all for your input. I didn't think there was an elegant solution to this but I had to "run it past the experts" first.
