Saving e-mail to USB Disk (Vista)

We are using Outlook 2003. When I save an attachment to one of the standard disks, this goes very quickly. But when we save an attachment to the external USB disk, this may take 10-15 minutes. The USB disk really is not that big! What might be causing this behavior? Is there any way to speed up this process? Or do we have to first save to the regular disk and then copy the attachment?

It's probably safer and quicker to save the document to your hard disk, then copy it to the USB drive in Windows Explorer.

Thanks, but actually this problem seems to be unrelated to Outlook. It happens no matter what. Perhaps I am not fully up to date, but is there a general problem with some USB gear not working entirely happily under Vista? Is this perhaps a known problem that Microsoft will fix in SP1?

I am not aware of such general problems, but perhaps others can comment on that.

Are you sure that the speed available to the USB connection is the same as that to the Hard Disk - or Network Disk? HTH

Is your system up-to-date with patches? In particular, Cumulative update rollup for USB core components in Windows Vista.

The problem may have resolved itself ... the USB external hard disk died this afternoon.

Thnaks to all for the suggestions.
