Folder won't Delete w/ no error (Windows XP SP2)

I have an interesting problem that isn't hindering at all but more just annoying. I recently changed the name of a folder containing my music but for some reason it created a new folder while keeping the old folder. So of course I deleted the old folder. It disappeared... but then seconds later, reappeared in the same location it was before. The folder has another folder in it which does the exact same thing and neither folder has an data in it (including hidden folders). I am not getting an error message and it IS deleting, but then reappearing every time.

    Is there a solution?

    Thanks,

    -Ben

BTW, which folder are you renaming - the My Music folder? If it is a folder created by Windows system, I don't think it should/can be deleted.

    Hi Ben

Jjjjuuussst before you go with Skitterbug's idea, in a typica XP system the My Videos and My Music folders will be recreated if deleted from the My Documents folder.

To delete them forever it is not just a case of deleting them with the Delete button or a non-Windows application (sorry Skitterbug)

Some applications require the My Music Folder but you can disable it, like so

    1) Click Start
    2) Click Run
    3) Type the following in the run textbox regsvr32 /u mydocs.dll
    4) Click OK

If there are problems you can re-enable it, like so

    1) Click Start
    2) Click Run
    3) Type the following in the run textbox regsvr32 mydocs.dll
    4) Click OK

What is the folder name that keeps coming back? It may be one of the Windows special folders. If it is not that, I'd guess you have something else running which expects that specific folder to be available and creates it if it is not there.

To all of you who thought it was a windows made folder, I'm sorry for not specifying earlier, it is in fact a folder that I made about a year ago (not in Documents and Settings).

OK, let's get some more facts off you.

    1) Did you create this under the current XP Account?
    2) Is the folder "connected" or used by a Windows application or Music Application?
    3) Where is the folder , under your account or on the root drive?

Before I answer those questions, I was looking at the folder and I noticed it was shared on the network. I unshared it and deleted it and it hasn't come back yet. Would sharing a folder cause it to not be able to delete?

Re: Folder won't Delete w/ no error (Windows XP SP

Problem resurfaced, issue is NOT sharing. Folder was gone for a good hour then when I came back to my computer was there again.

The folder is located on my external hard-drive with the name Ben's Music - 9,935 and the subfolder Rip, which seems to be the problem folder. As far as I see there is NO data (including hidden data) in the folder

Jerry, in response to your questions:
    1) Did you create this under the current XP Account? I can't completely recall where the folder was created, "Ben's Music" was created as long as 6 or 7 years ago, but the "Rip" folder is new and was probably made on the Laptop where I currently am having the problem (although the folder is located on my external), but I will have you know that when transfering my music onto my desktop the problem persists there as well with the same folders.

    2) Is the folder "connected" or used by a Windows application or Music Application?
    No

    3) Where is the folder , under your account or on the root drive?
    Again, external drive

Skitterbug, I tried the product and I had thought it worked... apparently not, thanks for the attempt though, the product will be useful in the future for other things I'm sure.

If you delete it and it keeps reappearing then most likely you are running some software that keeps creating it if it does not exist. You could use Process Monitor or FileMon for Windows to attempt to identify the culprit.

What are the properties of the Rip folder ??? What program do you use to rip music ??? Does that program deposit the results of ripping into that folder ??

You might want to grab a copy of the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> utility Unlocker and give it a shot at that folder. I understand that you are not getting any error messages when you delete the folder, but this will expose if the folder is being actively used by another program. It sounds more like the folder is being recreated by some program you have running.

One of your players (Windows Media Player, Real Player, QuickTime or iTunes, etc, etc), which you use to rip the music from the CD, points to this folder as default folder for ripped music. Open these players one by one, navigate to Properties or Settings and then try to locate target folders. When you find the entry, point it to different folder.
