XP from 2K Free upgrade?

Has anyone heard any whispers if MS will be offering a special price (aka free ) to those who purchase a system with 2K installed very close to the official release date of XP?

i've heard the the major oem's are offering upgrades, but at a price of about $20-30. i don't expect MS to offer one, since most copies of the os are bought with new hardware.

systems will soon be shipping with xp preinstalled, so i'd wait to buy one and save the $30.00.

They could not pay me to upgrade as long as XP comes with the Registration/Activation Wizard.

Sony has Windows XP, for any Sony Laptop with Me on it, so it may have it also for 2K.
MS does NOT offer with the purchase of a new computer, the OEM does.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Dell offers the W2k upgrade to XP for $20 with certain models. Available only after thorough testing of XP.

Has MSFT announced that Win 2000 is dead after Win XP Is released?

I've not yet seen such an announcement.
Any pointers to such an announcement at the MSFT web site?

nothing I've seen either, but i won't be surprised if it's no longer manufactured after release of XP - when the stock runs out, it's gone.

BTW - SP3 is or soon will be in beta.

I think Win 2000 will be around for quite a while.

There are many systems that could be upgraded to Win 2000, but not to Win XP.

used, yes. sold, doubtful. programs are generally pulled from availability upon the release of the next version. when htestore stock is gone, it's gone.

os's last a little longer - but not much. "Normal" consumers may not be able to buy win2k retail in 6 months - but corp licensing or OEMs on business class machines will continue to provide the older OSs for about a year. NT4 removed from VL about 6 months to a year ago.

Re: XP from 2K Free upgrade?

What does concern me is that eventually the retail user will not be able to buy an operating system that supports their second user computer.

I have installed Windows XP on a Dimension P133c with 64MB Ram and it works, it is slow, but it works. Unlike ME which wont install unless you use the special switch at setup.

So, if you have an old P100 you are basically caught as ME wont install (normally) and 98 runs very slowly indeed.

Re: XP from 2K Free upgrade?

XP on a 133? I'm in pain... the old machines can't support a lot of the hardware XP does and XP doesn't support a lot of the hardware found in old machines. Why waste the time or money trying ot make it work?

Stick with win9x on those old things. For a P100 - use win95 if win98 isn't acceptable. It can't be any slower than XP - and should be much faster.

Why do you need to buy a new OS to begin with? You have a license for the OS it has now and those are perpetual - until the hardware dies. There is no reason why you *must* upgrade. Stick with what you've got.

I have a P133 with 56 megs - win98se runs just fine on it - ME did too, but i gave the license to the kids and put SE on the old machine.

Thanks, that was what I meant of course. I would not run XP on a P133

someone tried. actually it was a faster machine but she testing activation and removed her ram and accidently put in 32 megs thinking it was 128. She couldn't understand why it was took so long to boot (close to an hour). When she tried to run setup to install a copy on a new partition it told her she needed more ram.

it wasn't me - i *never* have blonde moments like that. mine are usually worse.

Apparently NT 3.52 will boot on a machine with 12MB Ram minimum. When I got my first comp upgraded from 8 to 24, guess what I installed? Yep, good ol' NT 351. It was like a major achievement to get it installed and working on the Internet.
