    OCR - Your Opinion

    Hi all,

I'm starting to think I'm questing for the holy grail, but I *need* to get my hands on a solution for converting Scanned .pdf documents into to .txt, easy so far as there are lots of products on the market some of them free.

However, I'm also looking for a cammand line/Visual Basic componant that will allow us to dump a batch of scanned PDFs in one folder and convert the lot into readable single text file in another.

I've "done the net" on this one, so to speak, any suggestions for the right software?? I'm not scared of a bit of coding but all the free stuff out there does not seem to be accurate enough.

If you've any software or hints list them below and I'll try them in order.

If you've a similer problem, I'll be back every now again and will happily discuss the options I've tried

    tx

Also remember that a GOOD protected PDF file can NOT be software scanned. If the file has been set as NO Print then it can not be scanned.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I can open a PDF doc in Acrobat 5, choose the Text Select tool (see screenshot) to select text, right click and select Copy and then past it into Notepad.

Sorry, that wasn't a scanned document. It doesn't work with scanned documents.

Money is required, but look at these products, which I think have received some good reviews:

ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Full Feature List (see "Hot Folder" near the bottom)

FineReader Development Products (seem to be one or two versions behind the packaged product)

If you do evaluate it, please post your comments here. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Hi,

I've used the free application from SimpleOCR which does a fine job on simple documents. They also do an SDK which might meet your needs

You might take a look at Nitropdf, which sells for $99 and has a 14-day free trial.
