    Adaware Update Problem

I've been unable to downlaod the update file from Adaware for the past 2 days. Tue process begins, finds and update and then starts toDL it and hangs at 5% with an "Error retrieving update" displayed. I've tried on 2 different computers using 2 different broadband ISPs.

Anyone else having similar problem or know a fix ??? Perhaps I need to upgrade to the newer version ???

I just updated without a problem. Do you have version 7.0.2.6?

    Re: Adaware Update Problem

I don't think so. Looks like v1.06. I have the install files for Adaware 2007 on my desktop, but had held off installing it because I had read somewhere the there were some issues with it. Maybe I should just upgrade.

    Re: Adaware Update Problem

    Hi Doc,
I found I needed to upgrade to 2007 version just over a week ago - For whatever reason, every time I checked for v1.06 updates (for well over a week) I kept getting back that there were none! Any chance that they've given up on 1.06? or perhaps I just had some unrelated other problem. Anyway, once on 2007 all seems to be running smoothly, but it does takes longer to load and run than the old version.

    Re: Adaware Update Problem

As Keith (aekyall) mentions, scanning with AdAware 2007 is slow, but otherwise, the initial problems appear to have been solved. It's probably time to upgrade.

    Re: Adaware Update Problem

    Doc,
I had the latest version of AA but have been having problems with getting updates similar to what you describe.
That, in addition to it seeming to take "forever" to do a scan and hogging resources, have finally forced me to uninstall AdAware 2007 completely.

I'm not saying I have given up completely on AA ( it has been one of the outstanding spywaremalware programs for a long time ) but I'm just going to cool it with AA until I hear better reports about it. JMHO.

    Re: Adaware Update Problem

    Keith,

Thanks for the input. I'm beginning to suspect that it might have to do with their servers. I've noticed in the last few weeks that Adaware has been taking a bit longer to load and I've had this same update issue in the past, but only for a few hours or a day. If I hadn't tried it on 2 machines using 2 different ISPs, I'd probably suspect the program was somehow corrupt and remove and reinstall it. I might just follow Viking's lead and remove it for awhile and try the latest version later.

    Re: Adaware Update Problem

Thanks for that Hans. I think I'm going to remove it entirely for a couple weeks and then give the upgrade a try. I'm pretty well covered by other programs and Adaware hasn't found anything on my system in almost a year.

Thanks Bob. I think I'm going to follow your lead and remove it for a couple weeks.

    Re: Adaware Update Problem

I agree it's odd, since after they stopped updating 1.06 there were at least no error messages, at least not here. So I think you are doing the right; unistall, check what is being said, and update to a newer ver. I'll just add my experience.

They stopped updating the definitions for AA 1.06 on 31 December. I mentioned it recently in another thread about AA, and it's mentioned somewhere on their site.

Have not had any problems the, hmmm, around 14 days I've used AA 2007 (7.0.2.6). What I mentioned about memory use of the aawservice.exe process in the other thread, and that it no longer seems to be a problem, was related to comments made during the summer (earlier versions), I think.

The only thing I found, though I should say I have not read too deep in the documentation, was that I had to give Internet access in my firewall to: Ad-Aware 2007 (core program) (not sure if I added it), Ad-Aware 2007 Service and Update Manager. Worked from start, then I changed the Ad-Aware 2007 Service FW setting to "Ask", as test. Later found that the update manager only had some small update to the program, no definitions. A check some days ago, more updates to the program, this time I d/l them. But no definitions. Then I ran the definition update from inside the program, now my FW popped up and asked, and definitions were downloaded.

Don't know, as I said I have not bothered to read so much, but it seemed like at least those times the update manager didn't take care of definitions.

But Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06 do not get any more updates.
