Windows thinks I'm Mac (XP Sp2)

This evening I tried to go to the Windows Update page. Instead I am given a page which tells me that page is only for Windows. Then it gives me a link to go to the MAC page to update. I'm not sure what has happened to turn my computer OS from Windows XP to Mac. Any ideas?

One thing I thought when I read your post - are you using Safari or are you going to the update site with Internet Explorer? I don't know if it would make a difference but that's the first thought I had. Someone else will probably have a better one!

What happens if you go to Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update?

    Skitterbug:

I'm not sure what Safari is, so I mustnot have it. I use IE 7 and still can't access it. I can access everything else, but not the update.

    Hans:

I have tried both and I still get the same message. Here is the message from both Windows Update and Microsoft Update that is given to me:

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems only.
To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.

Re: Windows thinks I'm Mac (XP Sp2)

    Doc:

    The URL is: http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupd...n&thankspage=2&

When I whittle that down to the "v6" or the "/" just past "windowsupdate" I get the same message that I put in my post to Hans.

I have made sure that IE7 is my browser rather than FireFox, but I still ge the error message. It apparently sees my computer as a Mac, since the last line in the error message refers to to a Mac link.

I found some suggestions to change v6 in the URL for Windows Update to v4 (I think that's what DocWatson is getting at), but when I try it with either v6 or v4, I just get redirected to Microsoft Update. Might be worth a try though.

Well, I changed the "6" to a "4" and deleted everything after that. It still took me to the same link.

Safari is a browser that a lot of Mac users like to use. It was a very long shot on my part regarding why the website might have thought you had a Mac O/S. This seems to be a one in a kind problem so I hope the other posters can help you solve it. Good luck!

    Ray,

I entered the URL you posted and guess what.... I got the same page you get about this being only for Windows.

"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

When I wittle that address down, as you did, to the v6, I am redirected to the default Windows update page http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us

Where does this link take you ???

    Doc:

When I whittle it down, it still takes me to the link I gave. I am going to try something else that another individual suggested and see what happens. Hopefully it will.

I carried out the instructions from the link you gave. Deleting the cache and then going to the XP menu to go to Windows Update sent me to the same link that I gave Doc. I can't seem to go any place else. I've got to follow the other instructions I found to see if a change in the registry will help. I may have to buy a Mac!!!!!! (o:

    Kaplinb:

The link you gave solved the problem. When I went into the registry and looked at the two places the info told me to go, the ID was completely missing. So, I deleted the keys in both places, closed the registry and rebooted. Oh yes, I did back up the registry just in case and saved the two keys also, as the instruction indicated. Thanks a lot for the help. I went to update and found one item to install.
