Sorting subfolders, folders and single URLs (IE 7.0)

In Internet Explorer, how do I sort my Favorites subfolders within a top-level folder so they, the subfolders, are in alphabetical order within the top-level folder? As an extension to that, how do I sort the (Favorites) top-level folders so they are all grouped together, in alphabetical order and followed by an alphabetical ordered list of single address URLs that are not in a folder or subfolder. Any insight that anyone can supply is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Does right-clicking (when viewing the favorites, not in Organize...) and selecting 'Sort by name' do what you want?

Leif, this does absolutely nothing for me and that is what is frustrating. The menu says "Sort by Name" and it won't do this. There is obviously something I am missing and I don't know what it is... <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

If you have the Favorites displayed on the left side of the screen, close it. Now click the Favorites on the menu and right click in a BLANK are and select "Sort by Name". Now things should be sorted in BOTH the menu and the Favorites side bar when you reopen it.

DaveA, that worked for most of them, but I still have one, that I know of, where the subfolders are not sorted alphabetically. Do you know what the sort order is for this menu function. It almost looks like it sorts folders then the subfolders and then individual URLs. If this is the case then a sub folder could get "out of order" by the sort of the individual URLs it contains. Let me know your take on this. Thanks for your help with this,

I have noticed that the sub-folders do NOT display as sorted in the "Favorite Center" but do in the "Favorite Menu". It has been this way for a long time, and I think even in IE6.

In the Favorites Center you should be able to drag 'n drop the folders & links into whatever order you wish. I know it is not as convenient as just clicking 'sort by name' but it should work.

What operating system are you running? Is it up-to-date with patches?

Joe, I am running Windows XP Professional SP2. It is as up to date as I know.
