Running SAP seems to impac tother applications (WIN XP)

After an SAP session (as a user) other applications (MS Office XP, Windows Explorer, etc) run very slow until I reboot. Is this a known problem with SAP (version 4)?

Could you check in the Processes tab of Task Manager:
    1) How much memory SAP uses while it is running?
    2) Whether SAP remains in memory after it has been closed?

You and Hans seem to know what you're talking about, so I may be in the minority here, but what the heck is SAP?

SAP seems to be using very little real memory and it does not stay resident after I close out. The problem seems to be IEXPLORE.EXE. It is not loaded before I run SAP. After SAP closes it remains in memory and uses 95-100% of the CPU cycles which is probably why all other applications run so slow. IEXPLORE.EXE continues to run even 20 - 30 minutes after I close out of SAP. I am using a Government laptop and do not have Admin access so I am limited in what I can do. I understand that IEXPLORE.EXE is associated with Internet Explorer but can also be a virus/spyware.

IEXPLORE.EXE *is* Internet Explorer, and it is very well possible that SAP uses the browser to display its screens.
I think you (or your IT department) will have to take this up with SAP support.

Thanks for the help. I did turn it over to the support group but I wanted to have some idea of what the real problem was before opening the ticket (telling the doctor it hurts here when I do this is better than just "it hurts").

The problem appears to be IEXPLORE - it stays resident and grabs all the cpu cycles. At least now I know how to clear the problem without rebooting.

Was either SAP or IE recently updated? What version of IE are you running?

I am not aware of any upgrades to either SAP or IE. IE6 is the standard configuration. This problem appears to be common to many users so it is not an issue with my laptop.

What happens if you open IE first? Does it stay open when you exit SAP? Can you close it without it running in the background?

IE does stay open when I close out of SAP. I have to close IE separately. Even after I do close IE, IEXLPORE.EXE stays resident and uses all available CPU cycles. I tried opening IE first, then starting SAP - the problem still occured after I closed out of SAP and IE.

If IEXPLORE.EXE stays running then some other process is using it or it is still waiting for a response from a web resource. You (or your IT folks) might want to use something like Process Explorer v11.04 to get an idea of what is happening.
