    "CPU is unworkable"

My CPU is a Pentium II @ 450 MHz. This week I am receiving a screen during boot-up that claims,

    "Pentium II-MMX CPU @ 233 MHz.

Detectiing IDE primary master ...WDC AC28400R
    Conflict I/O ports : 2F8
CPU is unworkable, or has been changed.
    Please recheck-CPU softmenu.

F1 to continue, Del to enter setup."

If I press F1 I can continue to operate, but very slowly, if I press Del I go to a DOS window which is meaningless to me, but does have CPU SOFTMENU highlighted.
Ack, hack, I'm going to bed. Any help will be apprieciated.

It sounds like your CMOS Setup data has become corrupted, or you may have had a hardware failure. If you are not comfortable in that hardware setup screen, then you probably should take your box to a repair shop.

Thanks for your quick reply. I figure that the only way I will ever become comfortable with messin' with this box is to poke around in it! Where would I find info on workin' w/ the hardware setup screen?

The manuals that come with the PC would be a good place to start. You might also find some information on the WEB site for the manufacturer. You might also find someone familiar with your hardware by asking questions in the Hardware forum here. Be sure to identify the make and model of the PC and any adapters you are asking about.

My machine was made by a local guy. I've talked to him, and he is going to talk me through it.
