    Vista won't shut down (HP)

My Vista machine won't shut down at all. That includes restart. "Shutting down..." will display all night long if I let it and never shuts down till I press-n-hold the power button for a few seconds. It re-starts OK afterward. What might cause this hang-up and how can I fix it?

Can you run Task Manager and see what is running? If you start it before invoking a shut-down, I would expect to see various applications closing. If some shutdown and then the process stalls, it could be something not wanting to stop - e.g. AV scanner. If you see no changes, it may point to a deeper problem.

    This is something to try.
While it's running. Look at what is starting up in the background. If it is a program not needed for Windows to operate, disable the start up feature. You can always invoke a program in the all programs list.

I find the CNTL-ALT-DEL display to be itself misleading. Sure, you can call up Task Manager, but it is the RED ICON for 'SHUT DOWN' in the lower right corner of all of the screens, which I think is new with Vista and that many miss. That gives you a greater sense of security than leaning on the button, although I confess the button seems to work.

While in Task Manager be sure to check 'Performance', because that will give you a timeline of the resources that are being used.
