extra spaces (2007 sp1)

This one should be easy, but I haven't been able to find the answer. I am working with manuscripts written by someone else and intended for publication. I need to get rid of extra spaces inserted after paragraphs. (People who learned to type on a typewriter put extra spaces between sentences, but this can cause problems for electronic typesetting, so they need to be removed.) Getting rid of extra spaces between sentences is easy -- I run a global find-and-replace to replace "space-space" with "space". I run this until it returns zero (sometimes this author puts as many as 6 spaces after a period). However, I haven't been able to find out how to use this method to get rid of an extra space after the last period in a paragraph. Is this possible?

In the Find what box, enter
^w^p

And in the Replace with box, enter
^p

^w
stands for white space (any combination of spaces and tabs), and
^p
for a paragraph mark.
