Hidden Text turns itself back on (Word 2003, SP2)

With Show/Hide turned off, the Style Separator still appeared in a document an attorney was working on. He unchecked the box for Hidden Text in the Tools, Options, View tab, and all was well. The Style Separator no longer displayed, and he was happy. He repeated this in a second document, and continued to work in both documents.

Half an hour later he called me to say that the Hidden Text box had, apparently, turned itself back on. He didn't change it back. Is this possible, and what would cause that to happen? Does that option stick with a document, or when set once does it affect all documents? My guess is that it sticks with the document.

It should be noted that he is using styles, has a Table of Contents based on styles, and uses cross-references in the document.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Whether hidden text is displayed is an application-level setting, not a document-level setting. It is not stored with a document.
Possible explanations for hidden text becoming visible again:
    - The user played with the Options dialog some more, and (perhaps inadvertently) ticked the Hidden Text check box again.
    - The user opened a document that contains a macro that turns on displaying hidden text (or the template that the document is based on contains such a macro).
    - The user has an add-in installed that changes the setting.

Thank you, Hans. That at least gives us some places to check. We all really appreciate your contributions.

(What is the "Style Separator"? Sorry to be ignorant about this.)

The style separator, introduced in Word 2002, is a special hidden paragraph mark that enables you to use two different paragraph styles on one line. To create a style separator, type some text, then press Ctrl+Alt+Enter and type more text. If you now select another paragraph style, it will only apply to the text after the style separator.
