how to change file ownership in Vista Home Premium (Vista Home Premium)

I recently got a new HP laptop with Vista Home Premium. I use an external hard drive to keep music and photographs so I can access them from my deskatop as well.
When I open an explorer window I see that new files I create have a user in the form smith bob but any existing files on the external drive have owners in the form of 1111-561-1-1-462728126.
Coming from the Unix world I can easily change file ownerships if I am root. Home Prmium does not have an Admin user that can do that - so is it possible for me to change the ownership of a file ...

What you're probably seeing is the code that Vista reads from the Unix.

Re: how to change file ownership in Vista Home Pre

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I use in Unix at work and am familiar with the way it does things and sometimes get frustrated with Windows when i can't do something in a way that seems so easy in Unix.
The external drive I'm talking about has files created on a Windows XP machine and copied to that drive - it's all in Windows.
The problem is that the user accoount that created the files on the XP laptop doesn't exist on the Vista laptop. Vista can't display the proper name for the user so it just shows whatever it uses ti identify a user to itself - in this case a string of characters.
What I would like to do is change the ownership of the files from its previous account on the XP laptop to the account on the Vista laptop. Usually an Admin user has the power to do that but I don't think that Vista has that user - it does exist at the next level of Vista though. But I have Vista Home Premium and would like to find out how to do it with that version.
Thanks for the tip about the keyboard problem in the other post - so far so good.
    Thanks,
    Don

Normally Windows does NOT claim Ownership unless the folder is under the "Users account" folder.
Is this folder on the external drive a copy of a Users folder from the XP machine?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Don,
You are probably operating as an administrator within Vista (unless you created a separate non-admin account for yourself). Right click on one of the files in question, select "properties", click the Security Tab, then click the "Advanced" button. Click the Owner tab and the "Edit" button. You can change ownership from here.

No - it's just under a directory for storing music.
There is no real problem with its staying the way that it is - I could just drop the Owner column from the display but I thought since I'll be using the new machine from now on I would just transfer file ownership to the new account.

Each user has an associated unique ID. When you got the new laptop it no longer understood user IDs from the old computer. Even if you have created the same user name it will have a different user id. So it is a good idea to take ownership of all these files.
