First, in todays world what do you expect to gain by doing this?
As most of the reasons from the past are no longer valid.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

just to divide my back ups. Finish installing all the programs and make an image. Then just use synctoy to sync nightly the whole data partition to an external and use MOZY for off site backup. I think this is the easiest way to do it. Any better ideas?
    Thanks for the insight

You could just make a folder on C: and make sure all your user data was in it. Then backups & syncing would be easy.

but then the Drive image of the programs would include all my files which would be a waste

So, go ahead and partition it. Just be sure to leave plenty of room on your system drive. I'd leave that partition 30 - 40 GB.

I don't use MOZY and never would. I want my stuff in MY sweaty little hands, not off somewhere at a remote web place that I have no control over. But, that's one man's opinion only! Given the low cost of external USB drives, the ease of use and connecting or disconnecting simplicity, I can't see where "trusting" your data to a third-party is better or safer.

But, I am curious as to why you think that total drive imaging would be a "waste" since it is so easy, quick and effective? You can do so as often as you like or need, whether the entire drive or selected files.

One reason why I partition my hard drive and do a separate backup of the Data and the System is so that I can restore the system image if something goes wrong, without impacting my data.
