Removal of colour background from desktop icons (2003)

Is there any way to remove the blue background from desktop icons, so the writing is on a transparent background, see screenshot for details.

The method in the link should work. Is the background that the icons are sitting on just a plain colour, a wallpaper picture or what?

Re: Removal of colour background from desktop icon

Are you sure that the screenclip you showed in your post is not of a "selected" (highlighted) icon? Here's a clip of several icons on my desktop, showing one of them as selected and it so happens my default Windows color for selections is in blue.

Having said that, it DOES seem to me that I remember a problem in this icon transparency thing from way, way back but I can't recall the details. It might have something to do with what used to be called Active Desktop, but I've gotta think about it some...

Re: Removal of colour background from desktop icon

I don't think my supposition was correct, i.e. your initial example was not a selected icon. From you larger clip, it looks like the darker blue is your desktop color. I probably shouldn't be the one "helping" you with this since I use the single-click option and things are different in that mode. But, to clearly SELECT one icon, put your mouse arrow in an EMPTY place on screen, hold down the left mouse button and drag a box around ONE icon. It should then be selected. Again, when you do so, I think you'll find that the darker blue is your background color.

I haven't come up with the answer yet, but I do believe that Active Desktop is the culprit. If you want to see for sure, go into display, properties, desktop, customize desktop, web. When you get there, un-check any and all boxes and OK/Apply your way out. I don't know what YOU will see, but you can always return and re-check the boxes.

Thank heavens for this thread. I went nuts. I did something (obviously) that screwed up my icons and this helped me return the background of the text to "transparent." Whew. Now I can get to work.
