    Defective NIC?

In anticipation of upgrading to Vista, I purchased a new NIC ( that the Vista Upgrade advisor said I needed )
    It's an Intel Pro 100S.
Uninstalled the old Linksys NIC and powered down, replaced it with the Intel, booted up and Device Manager says that the "device failed to start: code 10"?
I already had downloaded the latest drivers for the Intel and I ran the install program but still same message.

Reinstalled the Linksys NIC, rebooted and I'm back and running again using the old NIC.
Went to the Intel website, couldn't find anything definitive there.
Googled around and only found a similar reference but it applied to Windows 95.

My suspicion is that I've got a bad Intel NIC but I guess I'm looking for some confirmation from other Loungers.

Sent a message to the vendor where I purchased it but have not yet heard back from them.

What are the thoughts out there?

    Re: Defective NIC?

Is the card backward compatible for XP ??? Does it have drivers for XP ??

I'd suspect it's defective if the answer to both questions is yes.

    Doc,
    Yep, it's backward compatible for XP and of course, I used the XP drivers, since I don't have Vista installed yet. <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    Re: Defective NIC?

    Just an update.
I returned the first NIC, got another and the replacement installed in a breeze. VISTA Update Advisor says it's fine and dandy with Vista. We are good to go.
Just got a DUD first time around.

    Good news for you Bob.

I did not know you were such an optimist.

    Re: Defective NIC?

The reason he's probably so optimistic, like ME, is that we're soon expecting our FREE copies of Vista, right Bob? (See elsewhere in The Lounge: <post:=681,732>post 681,732</post:> )

PS From your recent question to Joe, I gather that you're NOT too optimistic, huh?

    Paul,

Big Al got it right there.
We have been participating in Microsoft's "Feedback" program that entitles you to a FREEBIE copy of Vista Ultimate, after 3 months in the study.
Should be about three weeks to go about now. Optimist? Well, I hope so! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Re: Defective NIC?

I agree with most of what you say Joe. It's just that Bob is upgrading an XP box to Vista and not starting from scratch. He might run into some performance issues. The compatibility test says it is OK, but then MS said that XP runs on 128 MB of RAM when it first came out. I'm sure it's nothing Bob can't work through and resolve and I'm really just pulling his chain. But.......

It doesn't help Vista's reputation that the OEMs are selling under-powered machines loaded with Vista Home Basic to the public just to hit a price point. After all the hype about how great Vista's eyecandy is and how robust the OS is, and then you get your new system for $599 and find out that you have to upgrade the OS and the hardware to get that kind of performance and fluff. A Corvette may run on regular, but I wouldn't want to drive it fueled that way.

    But that's just my <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Defective NIC?

The Defective NIC question is solved, so I wanted to add one mo' thing.
<hr>...Bob is upgrading an XP box to Vista and not starting from scratch... <hr>
I don't know that he's ever SAID how he's gonna do it, but I think where the OS is concerned, the word "upgrade" can be a bit deceiving. I am planning to "upgrade" my OS to Vista but I will do a clean install on a dual-booting second 250 gig drive I have in this machine. So, I'm probably using the word somewhat incorrectly, given its usual meaning. I don't know that Bob has ever said which way he plans to go, but mebbe I've missed it.

Like many who volunteer here in The Lounge I'll probably keep my XP around for quite some time, for no other reason than to be able to continue to answer an occasional question about it.

    Re: Defective NIC?

I agree with what some OEMs are doing. My premise to begin with is that you need a machine that is properly configured hardware wise for Vista to run effectively. I've also read quite a few posts elsewhere with people claiming to have Vista running quite well with older, less powerful machines. I just think by and large Vista is getting a bad rap from many of the so called 'tech influencers' because Microsoft didn't do things in a way that they wanted.

All those Apple commercials, with the 2 guys playing Mac & PC, saying what a flop Vista is don't help either. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
