Pasting text into Formated Cells (Office 97 (XP Pr

    Hello,

I have a row that is formatted to have vertical text. However when I paste some text from the clipboard into a cell in the row the vertical formatting disappears which makes a mess of my table. I fear that this is simply a limitation of using Office 97 but I'm posting on the off chance that someone has a solution. Is there anyway to keep the cell formatting?

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

have you tried paste - special and selecting values? This should preserve the formatting

Thanks for the reply, Steve. Paste special gives a choice of HTML format, Unicode or Text. No mention of values. Also, I thought Paste Special is for preserving the formatting of pasted content. In this case I want to keep the text alignment of the cell which is vertical. When I paste the text the alignment is disrupted. Perhaps I should be looking towards making a VBA macro that I can run to fix the alignment after pasting.

If you want to paste into a single cell:
    - Select the cell.
    - If you want to remove existing contents, press Delete.
    - Press F2 to start editing the cell.
    - Press Ctrl+V to paste the text from the clipboard.
    - Press Enter.

Thanks Hans,I'm pasting about twenty lines of text into a column. The second row of text is formatted so that the data is displayed vertically rather than horizontally. Excel loses the vertical formatting after pasting the text. But now it's not a problem because I made a macro to run after pasting the text that reformats the text in the second row making it vertical once more. Making a macro proved easier than I thought.

    Best wishes,

Well I see you solved the problem by reformtting afterwards.

But the paste-special issue sounds like you are copying from 2 separate instances of excel (ie at least 2 copies are open).

Pasting keeps the values/formatting of the copied cells Paste- special values should paste the values and keep the formatting of the cells you are copying into.

Or perhaps Chris is pasting from another application, e.g. from a web page.

Hi Steve, I'm actually pasting some plain text copied from an email. I don't use Office very much which is why I'm still running the 97 version.

    Best wishes,

    Chris

Yes, that's true, the operative idea being copying from an application that is not the excel application that is being pasted into whether it is a different XL instance of another application.

You could start a new workbook (which will be discarded later) and paste the text from the e-mail into the new workbook.
Then copy the cells and switch to the target sheet.
You can now Paste Special with the Values option.

Thanks Hans, that's good to know, but I think in this case more trouble than it is worth.

    Best wishes,

    Chris
