Save causing intermittent crash (Word 2000)

We have redefined the Word FileSave routine to enable enforcing some additional information and version control. It has worked well for years. But now we are getting a problem on documents with external links that point to files to which the current user does not have access. Occasionally Word crashes - just flicks into another dimension. The good side is that it has already saved the doc. Good for the user and good for me - because there was only one line after the save:

    On Error Resume Next
    ActiveDocument.Save
    On Error GoTo 0

So I removed it. While I was there I removed the On Error Resume Next as well - didn't seem to be needed. Next I get some saying:

"Each time I went to save the file (Ctrl S) - it seemed to "freeze" and then the message "Not Responding" came up - I waited for a bit but then had to close the file to get out of it. It probably did this to be 12-15 times on Friday afternoon...."

    Any ideas?

As an interim measure, I'd restore the line On Error Resume Next. But that's not a real cure, of course.

Does the problem also occur in documents that contain problem links if you comment out the FileSave macro?

I'll try re-adding the resume next.

If the whole (addin) template is removed - no problem at all ie using the normal file save. If the resume next isn't the answer, I think I'll try commenting out the redefinition to eliminate some weird corruption in the template itself.

Are these external links <INCLUDETEXT> fields? This article describes a registry value that governs Word's automatic updating of such fields. I don't know whether this is relevant at the Save stage; wouldn't seem so; but maybe it will assist in the research.

How the behavior of the Word fields changes after you install the Word update (MSKB 330079)

Is this problem reproducible? Does it occur consistently on a specific document? If so someone here <img src=/S/angel.gif border=0 alt=angel width=15 height=21> might be willing to take a look at what happens when we try to intercept the File Save on another system.

I have three File-Save intercepters running simultaneously right now on my Word2000 installation, one is a Document Management System, one is my MRUse utility, and one is a model of an interception routine (that I'm working up into a training module).

Alternatively, if you can't issue a problem document, try rolling your file interceptor out of your Startup folder and roll in one (or two) of mine.

I have had various problems intercepting events in the past, often traceable to my mis-use of the "Cancel"parameter, but your code sounds as if it is stable, well-tested code.

Re: Save causing intermittent crash (Word 2000)

It is pretty irregular. I tried over 30 times and got it to happen once. I then put in the "fix" tried again - couldn't reproduce. Then someone else opened the doc teh next day and Word froze. Different symptom - I guess but nit one I saw at all. Seems to be limited to certain docs initially with external links (but apparently versions with pictures of the external data have also crashed!) and the intranet. (Won't happen on my standalone system at all - at least I could not get it to crash).

Currently trying the version with the Resume Next back in. So far so good. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    >It is pretty irregular
    Understood.
At this point I usually put a paper and pencil (rather than a computer!) next to my desk.
I record each instance of failure, date, time, machine, operator, file.

It has to be due to one of these basic causes:
<LI>Hardware failure (e.g. a couple of machines overheating)
<LI>Document corruption (possibly with several documents being cloned from the original corrupted document)
<LI>Software problem (either Word or the VBA code).

Regardless of the cause, I find that a pencil-and-paper error log usually shows me a pattern of behaviour that helps to identify the problem.

Are you able to post your File Save interceptor code, or mail it to me? I'd be happy to add a fourth interceptor to the three already running ....
