how to change default search parameters (XP pro sp

    Hi,
When I hit WIN + f , I want to the search dialogue box to open up and search, for all file types, in My Documents by default instead of local hard drives ©: which how it is now.
Then there is often just the single step of typing in a file name. That is what I use the most and don’t need to see or wait for all the similar files on the hard drive that are just temp files or links to the files I am seeking.

I did figure out how to get it to open to the search results box so I do not have to deal with the extra step of “what do you want to search for”.

I have looked at several threads archived in the forum and none of them seem to address this issue. The closest was about saving searches - <post#=632,563>post 632,563</post#> re: 315293 from jaylin- but the link to the file does not work and I’m not really clear how to do that procedure. I did try to save a search of My Documents. Did not take Also tried , browse My Documents, but that was no good either. also tried to auto complete but there is no path for simply Cocuments and Settingsmy machineMy Documents- even with the " " 's included similar to the entries available.

I would think there would be a registry hack that would alter the “look-in” value, but I did not locate it yet, if it exists.

Is it possible to accomplish this?

    Thank you

Are you using the Windows search companion or Windows Desktop Search?

It is an addon. You can get more information from Windows Desktop Search: Choose a Technology.

Unfortunately, I can't find any information on changing the default search parameters. The only suggestions I could find were to save a search. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Thanks.

Saving a search is about all I found as well and it did not have the desired effected.

Still there must be setting somewhere that tells it to choose hard drives by default.

Re: how to change default search parameters (XP pr

Finally figured out some sort of solution.

Looks like the simplest way to achieve what I sought to do is to use the search button in my documents page of windows explorer.
If one uses the search button in WE then the range/parameters of the search is whatever folder you have open.
