    Security and Copying (Access 97/sr2)

HELP!! I have a secured database that I need to copy and put on another server. I work in a hospital environment and there are 3 hospitals under on umbrella. One use this database to keep track of chart reviews. The other hospital wants to use the same database. I have to copy the database and clear out the data so they can start entering their own data. How do I copy the database? When I copy, it is telling me that I don't have permission. HELP!!

    Thanks,
    Deborah

Did you create the database or is this something someone created for hire? If the latter, you may not have the contractual right to copy the database.

When you say it is secured, what exactly do you mean, Access security, network security or what?

Thanks for the reply. It is a database thatwas created in house and I applied Access user-level security. I was able to locate the problem. The network tech associated a path with the database and connected the mdw file so it was not letting me in. Once he broke the connection, I was able to open the copy and make the necessary changes for the other users.

    Thanks,
    Deborah

In that case, your database isn't really secured at all, and anyone could change it simply by joining an unsecured workgroup and then opening the database.

I guess that I am a little surprised at your statement. If you follow the user-level security wizard and remove the admin from the admins group, how can a user break it if they join another workgroup? I was under the impression that it was completely secure. How can I make it completely secure?

Thanks for all the insight! You learn something new everyday....

You seemed to imply that you were able to open your database without the mdw file (since you said you could open it when your network admin "broke" the connection). If that's the case, then you likely have problems with your security, unless it was intentionally set up to allow restricted access when using the default workgroup.

Douglas's response explains it pretty well. It isn't enough to remove the Admin user from the Admins group. You need to remove all permissions from the Admin user as well.
