DOS COMMANDS

Still running DOS, trying to find the ASSIGN command. I have a D Drive and want to assign it to E, but my programs will only work in DOS. I am running the DOS. Attrib works, DIR works, MD works, RD works. CD works. but I cannot find the ASSIGN command.
I still have the DOS 6.22 Disks but could not find the ASSIGN command on them. There were a number of other EXE files, but not the one I am looking for. Please do not laugh, we just still have a large number of PLC Control systems and the programs run in DOS. :-)

Re: DOS COMMANDS

According to Computerhope:

About assign
Introduced with MS-DOS 2.0 and has been available up to 6.0 where it was removed because of concern with data issues. Was latter made available on the MS-DOS 6.0, 6.2 and 6.22 supplemental disks. The assign command redirects disk operation on one drive to a different drive.
Any users using Windows 95 or above should not use this command and consider using the SUBST command as a substitute.

Does that help, or at least enlighten you?

Re: DOS COMMANDS

I could not find a place to post the DOS question, so I picked Win95. I am not really running 95. I boot to dos to run my programs but when the computer was repaired the hard drive letters became C: and D: . before it was repaired it was divided into C:, D: & E:
all the correct files reside on the D: drive now, only all my automated functions (batch files) reference e: drive. Because I had (3) laptops setup this way, I wanted to use substitute to make the D: drive on the computer in question to appear as E:. My Dos manual dose refer to SUBST, But I have never used this command, but had used the ASSIGN years ago. where can I find the SUBST program ? I will look up how to use it and hope it could solve my problem. I do thank you for the replay.

I have the 6.22 disks, but no supplemental disks???

Re: DOS COMMANDS

SUBST.EXE should be part of the standard MS-DOS installation.

See MS-DOS subst command help

Re: DOS COMMANDS

Thanks, will check on it. I only have the (3) installation disks and I looked for ASSIGN yesterday but did not look for SUBST. I just hope in it not zipped or something on these installation disks. I am about to look. Richard

Re: DOS COMMANDS

The Windows 98 version of Subst.exe should be in C:WindowsCommand. The MS-DOS 6.22 version is on Setup Disk #2.

Re: DOS COMMANDS

This maybe a day late and dollar short, but since I did not see a reply to Hans last message ....

You can download the supplement disk from Microsoft: MS-DOS 6.22 Supplemental Disk: Description and how to obtain.

Oh, ok! Thanks for the friendly reminder!
I thought the original thread starter had a market-purchased busted or corrupted set of MS-DOS 6.22; my market set is still aok
Thought I was simply giving back what he once purchased...my error, my bad
