    SATA?

If my hard drive interface specs show

    1 x 40-pin IDC Ultra ATA/133 (ATA-7) IDE/EIDE

    Is that SATA?

I'm thinking about a new machine and it has SATA interface for the hard drives...

Nope - looks and sounds like ATA to me!

    Leif:

    OK, that being the case...

I know there are boards for using SATA drives on a motherboard that doesn't have SATA capability... Is/are there any boards that go the other way -- hooking IDE drives on a SATA motherboard?

Or could I mmaybe put it in an external drive case that hooks in through USB?

    Chuck Billow

    Dunno, in a word.

If you can't find anything with Google, perhaps someone with more experience than me can chip in...

    Stuart:

Yea, they will wear out eventually, you're right... but if the MB takes both it would at least mmake the info transfer less painful... 'sides, those drives are only about 6 months old right now, so...

    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Re: SATA?

Most motherboards have IDE connections as well as SATA. You should check the detailed specifications of the board you are getting before you worry about this.

On the other hand, disk drives are mechanical and wear out, so if you need a new PC then you may want to think about getting new disk drives anway!

    Re: SATA?

You should check the machine again that you were looking at, because as Stuart said, my "new" Dell (over 1 yrs. now) came with both SATA and ATA capability.

    Al:

That's what I thought as well...

But it appears that this Dell ( http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=206879511 ) doesn't.

    Too bad too.

    Thanks,
    Chuck
