Blank Desktop (Home/SR2)

Hello -

No Icons on Desktop on bootup

Twice in the last 2 weeks when Iíve turned on the PC, I am presented with a blank Desktop screen.

The first time, I did a C,A,D: No applications running, 35 processes. I did a Restart, got theEnd Program window showing explorer.exe. Restarted, everything was fine.

Today, when faced with the blank desktop, I went to Start, clicked Help & Support and then switched back to Desktop, the icons appeared (tho in Help & Support, no options were clickable- had to close it via Taskbar).

There are no other indications of anything amiss.

Is the PC telling me something dire?

Thank you.

Hi, AL -

It has been a while because when I've checked the necessity for defragging, I've received the message that it was not necesssary. I did it now and will be eager to see what the next week or so brings. Will keep the Lounge posted.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Curious

Got the wrong Doc, but as long as you got the correct information, it's not important. You might also want to run Disk Cleanup.

Hi there

Have you inadvertently hidden the icons on your desktop?

1) Right hand mouse click the desktop
2) Arrange Icons By
3) Show Desktop icons

It's OK, Doc Watson and Big Al get along just fine and we don't mind being misidentified as one another...

I believe this info would indicate that the problem isn't a setting Jerry.

Re: Blank Desktop (Home/SR2)

Hello -

This morning again encountered a blank desktop. I was able to click the Start button and it showed the appropriate items. I then tried to click other icons in Taskbar, nothing. Went back to Start button, now unclickable.

(Clock was working. Icons in Systray seemed to be okay)

Did a C,A,D, Restart, End Program, explorer.exe. Nothing happened (no Restart). Did C,A,D again & after clicking End Program, just hung. Back on Desktop, if I put cursor in the empty taskbar area, it changed to hourglass. In Desktop proper, it became the cursor.

I did a manual shut down, and all Desktop icons appeared.

Have done Defrag, Disk cleanup. No new downloads or add-ons.

Any other suggestions? As I said, there is no (other) indication that anything is amiss.

Thank you.

You might try a tweak from Kelly's Korner. #72 Enable/Disable Desktop Icons or in the right column opposite #195 Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar.

Hi DOC

I saw that tweak but didn't want to do anything on my own - thought I'd wait a see what the Lounge might offer. Thank you for your offering.

I have been Googling this topic and there are many, many posts on it - but most seem to date for 2003-2004...

Will stay tuned and report back.

Kelly's tweaks are pretty safe. If you are concerned, create a system restore point right before you run the fix from Kelly's Korner. If you don't like the results, you can just restore things to the way they were.

I'm curious , is this problem on a Toshiba laptop ???
