Impermanence of PNG (xp pro 2002 sp2)

I go to folder options and I select PNG (from Snag-it) to open with Irfanview and everything is fine for a day or so. For some reason it changes back to windows file and fax viewer. How can I make the change permanent? Impermanence

Does this happen with just PNG files or all image files?

Do you set Irfanview as "The default' for PNG files every time?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Instead of Folder Options, I find this procedure a little easier:

    1) Navigate to a PNG file in some random folder by way of Windows Explorer.
    2) Right-Click on the file and select Open With in the context menu.
    3) Select Choose Program at the bottom.
    4) Navigate your way to the location of Irfanview on your drive and select it.
    5) The most IMPORTANT step is the click the checkbox at the bottom that says to "Always Use The Selected Program..."
    6) Click OK

I should have mentioned that I always always check the do it this way forever box. I typically just need a screen shot from snag it one time so I just keep it on the desktop. So whenever I see the icon revert I'll just use the open with trick and I won't get so annoyed. Thank You!
