Device Connection

I was just checking the status of my Router, checking security etc when I scratched my head when I saw an unknown MAC address connected, I was not sure of the device that was attached as the Device Name stated NOT KNOWN starting 00:1A:E9:XX:XX:XX. Doing a quick MAC look up I instantly realised that the device was made by Nintendo..... Oops now I know it was our Nintendo Wii

This brings me onto my question that although the Wii is on standby it still appears to be connected to the internet via the router, does this mean there is packet data being sent and recieved? If so, how can I check this?

    Re: Device Connection

I suspect you are looking at the DHCP server on the router. This will issue an IP address to the device, and keep a note of the MAC address. The lease has a fixed lifetime, (often 1 or 3 days, you can check by looking at the output of IPCONFIG /ALL on your PC) but this doesn't mean that the device is still active.

It will renew the lease after 1/2 of the lifetime has expired, so you are likely to see this as "connected" any time you look, so long as you use the Wii every day or two.

    Yep, that makes sense.

I am probably fussing as I had a Fair Usage Warning from my service provider the other day and wanted to make sure that I hadn't been hacked or there was unwanted data being sent.

By the By, I have found out when I connect via VPN and RDC to work my usgae goes through the roof...gggrrrr

Maybe you need to look around for a different service provider. I remain connected over VPN doing all sorts of heavy stuff for days on end, and I've never had any kind of warnings.

You're telling me, I am absolutely furious but I hear that a lot of Service Providers in the UK are starting these warnings. It seems they are giving me a 3 strikes and you are moved to a "High User" band where you have to "compete" with other such offenders. During core hours I have been told that I can only surf the web and read emails and I should not connect to P2P networks. What infuriates me is I do not use P2P for anything but the VPN connection effectively creates a tunnel to work and they see it as P2P. No leeway has been allowed even for my work connection.

Enough of my rant <!rule=11>Rule 11<!/rule> could be breached at anytime
