Keeping Word Documents Together (Word 97)

One of the reasons I decided not to upgrade Office 97 was that I didn't like the way later editions of word would open new instances of Word each time filling up the task bar. Now, for some reason this is happening with my Word 97. I'm used to going to Window to select the new document but with word opening up separate instances of itself no other documents are showing under Window. How can I get the original Word 97 behaviour back and have all my documents opening together under one tab on the task bar?

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

I assume that this only happens with documents opened from Windows Explorer? Or does it also occur with documents opened from within Word?

By the way, in Word 2002 and later, you have a choice of showing document icons on the task bar or just a single Word icon.

Thanks for the reply Hans. Yes, it only happens with documents opened from Windows Explorer, but I never used to have this problem.

    Best wishes,

    Chris

The file association for .doc files is probably damaged. Try this to repair it:

    - Close all instances of Word. If you use Word as mail editor in Outlook, close all instances of Outlook too.
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type

    C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWinword.exe /u

    - Press Enter or click OK.
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type

    C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWinword.exe /r

    - Press Enter or click OK.

These steps unregister, then reregister Word. If you have installed Office 97 in a non-standard location, you must modify the path in the above instructions accordingly.
