    Sony DRU-8400B / XP Home SP2 (XP Home SP2)

Hello! I have a Sony-DRU8400B DVD Burner / Reader. XP doesn't seem to recognize the 'DVD' portion of the drive. It will burn CDs, and read CDs, but will not function as a DVD Burner or Reader.

The machine has a CD-RW Drive in the Drive 1 slot, and then the Sony DVD-RW in the Drive 2 slot. There are 2 hard drives in the machine as well.

This drive has never worked in this machine as a DVD Reader / Burner.

    Any sugggestions?

    Thanks!
    KST

I hate to sa this but it sounds like you've got a bad drive on your hands. You ought to get someone to look at it.

Is the Sony device set as a master or slave drive?

In other words, one of the HDs are usually set to Primary master with one of the opticals as Primary slave.
The other HD as Secondary master with the other optical as Secondary slave.

What software are you using to burn DVDs? What software are you using to play DVDs?

Re: Sony DRU-8400B / XP Home SP2 (XP Home SP2)

Hey Guys.... Thanks for all the input..... I do need to make one correction. The Drive is a Sony DRU-830A, and not a DRU-8400B.

Big Al.... Dude! I don't want to hear that! The device works fine and burns CD's fine, it just will not function as a DVD burner for some reason. And besides, it's a Sony! LOL!

Bob.... The Sony device is a secondary, or slave, drive to a Dell supplied CD-RW.

Hey Joe... I actually do not view DVDs with this drive.... I would like to use the drive to put data onto DVDs. I have tried to use Windows, but I prefer to use Roxio EZ CD Creator Basic. The machine is a Dell Dimension 8200. I purchased this drive 2 years ago, and it has never worked correctly. I have 3 other Dells with OM DVD-RW drives, all using Roxio EZ CD Creator. Although EZ CD Creator is an old program, it works fine on even my latest computer purchased new in Dec 2007. Up until I put EZ CD Creator on the latest machine, and it functioned properly, I thought EZ CD Creator might be the problem. I use EZ CD Creator because my business procedures are written for it's use, and employee training, it keeps them from handling the real files in Windows Explorer to burn disk; they can't accidentally delete the real files using EZ. In Windows Explorer, it will list the drive as a DVD-RAM Drive with no disk in it. Regardless of what kind of disk I put in the drive, the listing is changed to CD-Drive.

The Sony site is no help. I have tried repeatedly to get their 'CheckDrive' software, but I can't seem to get to the download page.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drive multiple times with no change in operation.

Thanks again for all your assistance!

Re: Sony DRU-8400B / XP Home SP2 (XP Home SP2)

The main reason I said what I did is that, except for the fact that mine is NOT a Sony, I have a Dell also and not too long after I got it, I tried for the first time to read a DVD disk of (at the time) a beta of Windows Vista that came from Microsoft. The DVD would NOT read but I could read and burn CDs just fine. On-line support from Dell, including having me boot to the included Dell diagnostics, showed the DVD function of the drive to be dead and they replaced it for me. Since then the drive has functioned perfectly, both as a CD and DVD drive. FWIW...

Hey guys, sorry for the delay.

Doc - Thanks for 'Drive Check'. It says my drive passed the test, and indeed, it seemed to work fine. Do you still think it could be a bad drive even though it passed the 'Drive Check' test?

I'm only accustom to using Windows and Roxio to burn CDs and DVDs. Should I try another program? If so, what should I try and where can I get it?

I think this is just strange!

    Thanks guys!
    I appreciate it!

If it passed the tests, it's probably OK. When you said it "it seemed to work fine" during the test, does it still work fine ??? Can you burn DVDs with it now ????

Take a look at this review of the drive and see if it sheds any light on your problem. It says that the drive comes with Nero software. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

No, it still doesn't work.... Roxio says there's no availale drive, and Windows won't allow me to burn a DVD. Windows and Roxio will allow me to burn a CD.

I used a DVD+R for the 'Check Drive' test.

Re: Sony DRU-8400B / XP Home SP2 (XP Home SP2)

Did you install the software for the drive (& Nero) when you installed the drive ???

Does the drive show up in My Computer or Windows Explorer ??? Did you read that review I linked to ???

Try running the test with the same media in the drive that you want to use for burning DVDs. This sounds more and more like a bad drive, but from where I'm sitting it's difficult to tell.

Re: Sony DRU-8400B / XP Home SP2 (XP Home SP2)

No, I haven't installed Nero.... I've got to download it. I'm not familiar with Nero... Is it a free download?

The drive does show up in Windows Explorer and My Computer.

I did read the review, but.... I didn't see anything other than praise, and that they use the Nero Software.

I did run the 'Check Drive' test with the same media I want to use, and it passed the test.

I think if it's going to work, it's going to work with Nero. So, I'll download it and try it.

I'll reply back if it works. But, I'm still open to suggestions!

    Thanks allot!

What version of Roxio is installed? Is it up-to-date with patches? Have you checked Dell's support site?

That review says The CD that comes with the DRU-830A contains the Nero 7 Essentials suite which includes Nero Express, Nero Vision, Nero Recode, Nero BackItUp, Nero ShowTime and InCD., so you don't need to DL that, you already have it.

Hey Doc..... That worked..... Using Nero 7, the burner worked..... So, I guess that was the key.

Thanks to everyone for their input! Sorry this dragged out so long!

    Have a great week!
