Windows XP SP3 (Windows XP Home SP2)

Has anyone taken the bull by his horns and installed SP3? If so, may I have your opinion about the differences between SP2 and SP3? Would you advise that it be installed?

    SP3? Ho-Hum.
    ---------------------------------------
Windows XP SP3 combines all previously released performance, security, and stability updates. It also provides a limited number of new and enhanced functionalities, although it does not significantly change the Windows XP experience or bring functionality from newer versions of Windows to Windows XP. The goals of Windows XP SP3 are to:
Provide a new baseline for customers still deploying Windows XP, to help them avoid the inconvenience of applying individual updates.
Fill gaps in the updates users might have missed by declining individual updates when using Automatic Updates, and to deliver updates not made available through Windows Update.
    ---------------------------------------

MIGHT be worthwhile to create a new XPSP3 slipstreamed CD, to catch up with all of the updates since SP2

What DaveA was trying to point out is that SP-3 has NOT been officially released. It is in the final testing stages. If you choose to install the release candidate version available now, you are likely to have to uninstall it when the real version is released. I'd recommend that you wait until it is the official version is released.

Thank you Joe, I will heed your advice. It took me ages to work up enough courage to install SP2, the same will probably apply with the new one. Therefore I received your wait advice gladly.

Re: Windows XP SP3 (Windows XP Home SP2)

I am thinking of installing SP3 to try and fix a problem I have. Does anyone know when the final version of SP3 will be released. I have searched for articles that might show a proposed release date but have had no success.

    Thanks

Microsoft hasn't published an official release date. According to Tech ARP - ED#86 : Windows XP SP3 RTM Schedule & Updates Rev. 1.1!, SP3 will be released in two waves, the first (Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish) in the second half of this month (April 2008), and the second 3 weeks later. I don't know how accurate this, but it's already mid-April without more specific information, so I wouldn't be surprised if the actual release date will be later.

Re: Windows XP SP3 (Windows XP Home SP2)

I'm sorry if it's bad news to you, but you don't solve OS problems by installing a service pack. Now you don't tell what kind of problem it is, and that's fine since it is a "SP3 thread".

But depending on the problem: a) severe problems are not solved, since the SP installation needs a working and stable PC; smaller problems in general are also most likely not solved by a SP. When MSFT releases a security update or another update (stability etc.) they usually indicate that it will be included in the next SP. They also use changes from the smaller hotfixes for specific problems to create a SP.

So if you have any problem I think you either have to solve it at present SP level or see if MSFT has a hotfix for your specific problem.

SP3 release? People always speculate. When was it said? 1H CY2008, i.e. first half this (calendar) year. Anything can happen, many speculated late April. I guess you know that for ex. Mary Jo Foley follows what MSFT is up to.

Re: Windows XP SP3 (Windows XP Home SP2)

Microsoft has already published what SP3 will contain: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview (downloadable as PDF or XPS file).

Added later: from the overview, it appears that SP3 is mostly a rollup of all updates that have been released since SP2 (August, 2004), with just a very small amount of new additions (some support for Windows Server 2008).

Re: Windows XP SP3 (Windows XP Home SP2)

Thanks. If I would have guessed, yes, I'd guessed they had done that now, this late in beta (such as the white papers at SP2 time et al etc.). But I have not looked for any paper this time. I just briefly discussed the principle about what might be included, i.e. *many* fixes are already there on a updated SP2 PC, as I know you know. And it's better/needed to have a trouble-free PC before SP install, than to try to solve anything with a SP. In general.

There's an updated schedule for the release of SP3 (mentioned by Woody on AskWoody.Com): see Tech ARP - ED#88 : Windows XP SP3 RTM Confirmed!
