Software installation glitch (XP ver 2002 SP2)

I've trying to re-install an HP ScanJet 4470c on a re-built HP computer. I insert the software CD-ROM and launch the setup.exe program. The program starts, but then is interrupted by a "Director Player" error. "Director Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry etc., etc."

What's "Director Player" and why might I have encountered this problem?

Director is HP software to help manage the scanner and documents. Are your video card drivers up-to-date? Is your monitor resolution set to one that Driector supports (check your scanner documentation)? Also, You might have a defective CD. You might try downloading Software & Driver downloads HP Scanjet 4470c Scanner.

Well, I've tried everything I can think of, everything you suggested, and most if not all the recommendations on HP's support site. Now for the rest of the story....

I tried reinstalling this scanner a few weeks back. As I connected the power cord, a big spark jumped between the power cord and the socket on the scanner. I thought there was a problem with the power cord and its "brick," so I ordered a new one. Meanwhile, I've diagnosed the source of the spark (reverse polarity at the wall socket). Now I plug in the scanner, and its little lights come on, but the computer won't recognize it. I did get the Precision Scan software installed after I downloaded it from the HP site (thank you, Joe), but the scanner is not responding.

It appears, therefore, that the spark incident fried something important in the scanner. Is there something else I can try, or should I just go buy another scanner?

    Personally, I'd just buy another scanner. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
