    XP Pro Repair (SP 2)

I had to repair my installation after an unsuccessful attempt to dual install Vista. This has led to the windows update telling me there are a number (92!) updates that need to be downloaded and installed. However whenever I try to do this it will download them but will not install them.

There is a knowledge base article, 555615, that appears to cover this but its advice "to install one update, then the others can be installed" doesn't work.

Is there anyway round this? Will the next issue of new updates resolve it?

It depends on why the updates failed. Have you checked the Windows Update log?

The windowsupdate.log is so big it's difficult to tell, but in each of the KB******.log there is the lines

"0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32sp4.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32sp3.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32sp2.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32sp1.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32driver.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32fp40ext.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32fp40ext1.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32wms4.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32wms41.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32ims.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32ims1.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32ins.cab does not exist
0.704: ref tag c:windowssystem32ins1.cab does not exist"

followed by an equal number of lines that say:

"0.813: KB928843 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct."

I've checked several of the logs and the messages are similar.
