    Slow Excel 2007 Startup (2007)

Why is Excel 2007 so slow to start up with an existing file?

I created a brand new file in Excel 2007, typed the word "test" in cell A1 and saved it. I then exited Excel and reopened the file. It took 59 seconds to open. Excel comes up fairly quick, but the file doesn't open for a long time. Excel 2003 never took this long.

are you opening the file from Excel or from Explorer? If from Explorer, do you have any add-ins loaded or are there any .xla files in your XLSTART directories?

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

I found the solution to the problem. It is documented on the following web page:

    http://martin.von-gagern.net/howtos/excel2007load

    "
At least on Windows XP the problem can be solved as described below.

    1. Application Explorer
    2. Menu Tools
    3. Menu item Folder Options
    4. Tab File Types
    5. List item XLS
    6. Button Advanced
    7. List item Open
    8. Button Edit...

In the dialog box that appears you need to make two adjustments:

    Application to perform action:
At the end of the line after /e append a space character followed by "" (including the quotes)
    DDE Application Not Running:
Insert new text: [rem see command line] (including the brackets)
    "
