    Shortcuts (IE 7)

A Gateway laptop started cycling through the bios splash screen and the Windows XP splash screen and would not boot up. Having purchased an extended warranty on the computer from Best Buy for an additional almost $300.00 the computer was taken back to them for repair. After looking it over they said the hardware was fine (which I don’t believe) and they wouldn’t fix it unless and additional $130.00 was paid for them to run a restore.

Well after contacting Gateway the computer was brought home and the restore was preformed there. After running the restore this computer is still acting strange and now Gateway only says to run another restore unless we would be willing to purchase tech support from them for another additional charge.

Here’s my question. IE 7 seems to work fine if you click on the IE icon and then go to whatever sites you may want to visit. However, if I set up valid shortcuts to sites like Woody’s Lounge or Google you can’t get there, it stalls. When I bring up the task manager it says IE Not Responding. Any ideas on how to correct this?

One other thing that Gateway will not help with is now when the computer boots up the Start Menu is open and visible. You must click on the Desktop to get rid of it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    I don't suppose you'd like to switch to Firefox? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

What was involved in the restore? Did it repair Windows or might that still be an option to try?

LOL no I think I'm stuck with IE 7. It is my daughter's computer. With the advise from Gateway she ran a restore form a partition on the hard drive which was supposed to put the computer back to the sate it was in on the day she bought it. She has no XP CD so it was a restore form however those kind of computers restore themselves. I really am not all that familiar with that kind of restore sine the computers I but have no pre-installed software except the OS and drivers for the hardware. As far as I know it completely restored the computer to day 1 except for the problems I tried to describe. Since she has no CD I don't believe a repair of Windows is feasible.

Is the PC up-to-date with patches? Have you checked the file associations for the URLs (in Windows Explorer go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types)?

It is up to date with all patches. What association would I be looking for? All shortcuts will not be associated with IE will they. Some shortcuts are only used to open programs where the one I am concerned about are really URLs.

    That is why I asked about checking the association for URLs. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Sorry I missed that. I'll have to check next time I get to her house. Or maybe I'll call her and frustrate her by having her try to follow my directions to check that. LOL

    Thanks

    Re: Shortcuts (IE 7)

I haven't actually seen her computer yet but I tried to have her check and she says she has quite a few file types that start with URL. Checking my computer I only see 1 so I'm not sure which to look at. Plus she said it is blank beside most of them and the button available is the "Advanced" button not the "Change" button. She does have one file type that says "Internet Short" cut but again it has no program listed beside it that opens it. I highlight my URL which says Internet Shortcut beside it and then hit the "Advanced" button and "open" is bolded plus mine also shows to open with Internet Explorer on the page before I hit the "Advanced" button. I'm not sure what to do now.

If you look at the back-most dialog in this image, you can see the various "no extension" URL entries. The most important is the HTTP one. You can ignore the Firefox-related content in the lower part of the image.

Thank you. One more question. I see click on it, click on advanced, then edit, and then type "open" in the dialog box. But do I need to make it bold and if so how? I have never worked with anything like this that I can remember.
    Thanks.

An item in the Edit File Type dialog is bold if it is the default action for the file type. To make an action default, select it then click Default (if that button is enabled.)
