Is it time for a new forum?

It seems like a lot of space used for Acronis True Image. Don't you think it's time to move it out of Software Finds and Wants? It is starting to sound a bit like a tech support forum.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Acronis True Image is quite popular among Loungers, but during the last six months (September 2007 - February 2008), there have been 6 threads about it in the Software Finds and Wants forum (plus 4 other threads in which it is mentioned). These threads tend to get quite long, but I don't think that it is enough to merit creating a forum dedicated exclusively to True Image.

I know Hans, my suggestion was not intended for serious consideration but, rather, a reminder that Software Finds and Wants needs a little discipline - once software is "found" and the initial discussion ends normally then that is no longer an appropriate forum for subsequent discussions or support.

In a serious tone, though, maybe we should consider a non-office problem/resolution forum where we can address technical issues of various applications so that the Finds & Wants can remain true to its purpose.

Re: Is it time for a new forum?

Sorry Don, but I have to voice my disagreement with you, hopefully not too loudly. I have to agree with Hans (and the other Lounge "managers") that there doesn't seem to be a need for a dedicated forum, especially for ONE program. Take a look at Graphic Applications and you'll see an example - there were a total of 36 posts there last year and that's NOT a forum for one individual program. In hindsight, we probably didn't need it, but then again MS Works doesn't get much play either.

I believe the title of any forum can be interpreted by many individuals in a number of ways. I for one look at the forum in question as "the software" forum and the "finds and wants" wording holds no sway for me. I believe it to be the place to discuss ALL software, the majority of which is non-Microsoft Office. Simply because it's already been "found" shouldn't have to mean that we no longer discuss, evaluate and yes, occasionally complain about a piece of software.

Now, since I think I probably participate in every thread about Acronis' products, I don't consider myself or the other contributors ill-disciplined in our discussions of the products. After all, like the TV dial, you don't have to "watch" that program if you don't care to. Sorry, I had to say that...

Re: Is it time for a new forum?

The Software Finds and Wants forum has expanded its range over time. As its description indicates, it was originally intended to discuss new freeware and shareware programs, but it has gradually come to include all software (free or not) that is not covered by the other forums. This means that the title of the forum isn't accurate any more, but to reduce it to freeware and shareware again seems forced to me. Moreover, people have become accustomed to post their "other software" questions here, and a change in title might cause confusion too. I'll edit the description of the forum, though.

Re: Is it time for a new forum?

Don,
I came to the Lounge after Software Finds & Wants was established so I never knew its intended purpose (freeware ?). I took its description literally and find it a very useful place for software of any kind. I also understand your feelings about the long detailed threads on True Image - I just skip over them as I've stopped using that software. While I don't think a forum dedicated to that program is warranted, I would be happy to see a variant of it. That would be a forum dedicated to all things BACKUP, hard and soft ware & procedures and experiences and media.

If I may suggest, the Spyware - AntiVirus - Safe Computing forum would be my destination for backup and recovery tools. Safe Computing to me, includes good backup and recovery methods.

Perhaps the admins may consider a relabelling of that forum to include backups?

Re: Is it time for a new forum?

I took a slightly different approach, Hans, just to see how "guilty" I am of overwork. In the first page of the software forum's thread list I see 99 threads of which 3 have the word "True" in their subjects. Not too bad I think.

I took a slightly more different approach

If you look at the first 99 threads in expanded mode, there are 631 posts, of which 58 have "True" in their subject.
So, unless I've fouled up somewhere, roughly 3% of threads cover True Image, but they make up over 9% of the posts .

Re: Is it time for a new forum?

Just to spoil the fun, I don't think the posts you referenced are within the first 99 threads

And anyway, not only did I search on "True" (as opposed to "true"), the search I ran was for "True Image" - and in the subject, not the body of the post....

Re: Is it time for a new forum?

Well, thanks for the discussion. Of course, I yield to the will of the group. Apologies if my use of the word discipline was personally offensive; that was unintended.

My serious suggestion was not to have a forum for a specific application but, rather, a catch all for all apps not covered by existing forums.

FWIW, I never thought the software finds and wants was meant for freeware [I am a little embarrassed to admit that I never read the forum description - just my inference of the forum title]. I think free, share, and commercial apps are all fair for "finds". Anyway thanks for your consideration.

Re: Is it time for a new forum?

I have just made a post in Words From On High announcing a small reshuffling of forums. The The "Spyware - AntiVirus - Safe Computing" forum has been renamed to "Computer Security and Backup", and "Software Finds and Wants" has been renamed to "Other Software Applications".

"Computer Security and Backup" is now the place to discuss backup and disk imaging software in addition to anti-virus etc.

See Forum Reshuffling - April 2008

Thanks, your suggestions sparked off these changes.
