    Turning off hard disks (2003)

    Dear loungers,

Does anyone know what "turn off hard disks" means in the Windows Power Options Properties dialogue box? I always have that set to take place before my system goes into standby or hibernation, but nothing ever happens.

    Regards,

    JMT

I don't use hibernation, so I can only go by what the Windows help screens say, which is that the power option turns OFF power to the hard drives. I don't think you would "see" anything if that happens. Maybe if you've got an EAR attuned for such sounds, you could hear the drive(s) spinning down as the power was removed.

Is this a laptop or 'desktop'?

I am using a laptop. I guess because the laptop is generally quiet, I don't here anything turn off because I don't hear anything to begin with. I was thinking that when the hard disks turned off, the screen would go blank or something similar would occur. I thought it would be similar to sleep mode or hibernation, but I guess everything keeps on running but that the hard disks stop spinning.

    Regards,
