    List files even if in sub-directories

    Hi,

    I have a folder in windows explorer that contains a number of sub directories. I need to collect all the details of the files in thesse directores into one list of files so I can analyse the file types and the size of the files. Is there a way of doing this? The output could preferably be into Excel where I can sort and filter the data. Is it possible to get the command prompt to list them and export them to excel using some switches or commands?.. else some 3rd party freeware software!

    Any suggestions will be great...
    TX
    Regards,
    Rudi

    Check out Karen's Directory Printer. <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> for personal use.

    In a command prompt window you can use something like this:
    <code>
    dir "C:test folder" /s > C:list.txt
    </code>
    This will create a text file list.txt in the root of C: that lists all files in C:test folder and all its subfolders.

    A very nice free utility is Karen's Directory Printer - it can output a list of files and folders to a file, and it is configurable.

    Re: List files even if in sub-directories

    Besides the two replies to this post, I recently found another solution which works very well too. Simply add the files / folders into a zip utility program. The list that gets generated, if viewed in details view lists ALL the files and the path in various columns. I am not sure if WinZip, 7Zip or WinRAR can do this, but I use ZipGenius (a freeware utility found here...http://www.zipgenius.com/) This utility allows one to export (txt) or print the list of file names and their paths.

    Thought I'd add this option as an extra.

    Cheers
    Regards,
    Rudi
