CD Burning Error (XP Pro SP2)

    Hi,

I am trying to burn a CD (well several actually) from ISO, on to rewritable CD's.

    * I am ERASING them which appears to be successful since windows pops up a message asking whether I want to burn something to it when I reinsert the disc after erase.
    * The fault occurs whether I burn an MS application CD or a Linux boot CD (as it happens I am actually trying to install OpenSUSE 10.3/11 or Kubuntu 8.04)

The specific fault I get is: "Operation has failed. Code: 8004020e, Reason: A generic error occured."

    Ny ideas?

What software are you using to burn the ISO? XP does not support ISOs without third party software such as the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> The Official ImgBurn Website and others.

    Hi Doc,

I didn't see any mention of the error there I quoted ... am I missing something?

Yesterday I copied the same image I used to another PC and burned it on to the same rewritable CD (erased first of course as always) and it worked absolutely fine so I'm beginning to think this has to be a hardware error.

Nope.... no mention of the error there. I directed you to that page because I was short on thime and thought you could chase down the link on that page for How can I write (burn) ISO files to CD? or perhaps find the information "ISO images are readable by most archivers, for example RAR can read them and extract files from them. That means that RAR can be used for extraction of the all ISO image for installation (no need to burn a CD)" useful.

If it is in fact a hardware issue, then neither is likely to help.
