Real Player

Enlightenment please... I tried to play an on line video discussion using Real Player but got a message saying updates were needed in order to view it so I opted to download the said data but even with the updated data when I tried to play the video a prompt with the same message. So I again clicked the update tab but got a prompt saying none were available, that my computer was up to date. Unless I am missing something this sounds like a conundrum, how do I get out of this cul-de-sac please? Regards Dave.

I think we've got to have more info to even think about this. When you open Real Player and click Help, About, what version does it say you have installed? If the online video is not something private, can you give us a link to it so someone can check out what the problem might be? Is it possible to open the video with WMP instead?

Re: Real Player

Thanks Big Al for your response, the problem I outlined has happened numerous times before but I have just ignored the prompt to download the upgrade yet the video played ok. However on this occasion I thought I would click the upgrade tab BUT [due to having been on various sites last night which offer such tv interviews for viewing.] I can't for the life of me remember the specific one I was logged on to when the prompt appeared. I thought I could trace it on the History tab but unfortunately the other user of the computer must have altered the settings as none were displayed. I will surf as usual till the upgrade message appears again and take special note of the site and video selected so as to furnish more information. Sorry for not being able to be more specific, memory failure I fear, I will not let the thread die. Thanks anyway, Dave.

This certainly does not answer your specific problem, but if you don't have a real reason for running Real Player itself (like, say, you paid good money for it!) you might wish to check out Real Alternative, which is and does many/most of the things that Real Player does - but without the baggage that Real Player brings along.

Re: Real Player

Thank you BATcher, I logged on to Real Alternative but [being rather green] was puzzled as to which of the options to download as there are no less than ten tabs to click. As for why I use Real Player? No reason other that the videos I watch require that format or WMP both of which I downloaded free. Regards Dave.

Re: Real Player

You can pick any of the links (except I wouldn't choose the one that says Real Alternative 1.70 - that is an older version). The links point to various sites from which you can download Real Alternative.

Re: Real Player

There are but two versions: Real Alternative and Real Alternative Lite:
"The only difference between the regular and lite versions is that the lite version does not include Media Player Classic."
and each version may be obtained from the main website, or one of four alternative mirror websites.
This explains the ten links. (The final link is to the older version 1.70, presumably kept there if you don't get on with the newer 1.75.)

Some people end up paying Real Money for Real Player, because they were unsuccessful in navigating their way through the various hoops to find the free version; Real Alternative is immediately available, and really .

As ever, thanks for the advice gentlemen, this site and it's host of helpers (especially the regulars who are there whenever blokes like me need help) is the best thing since sliced bread and is much appreciated. Not just the instant, clear, logic responses and patience shown by you all, but the design, simplicity and efficiency of the entire lounge web site. Thank you once again. Dave.

Re: Real Player

The only thing I'd be careful of with Real Alernative is that sometime ago I had problems with playback. This was not on streaming videos but on files I'd downloaded. The video would be very choppy or break up. Also, I could never get it to successfuly skip part of a video. If I turned around and played them in RP they were fine. These issues may be fixed by now but I thought it was worth mentioning. Finally, I just uninstalled RP and RA and quit worrying about that format.

Re: Real Player

Thanks for the tip Joe; I know the last matter is slightly off thread but as it has arisen from the original question maybe I can tag it on here. I downloaded Real Alternative, found it to play ok and rather prematurely deleted the version of RP that was on my HD. Having read your word of caution I thought I would try and play a downloaded video only to discover that the same happened to me so I un-installed RA only to discover that RP is not now free to re-install. On the assumption [rightly or wrongly] that by doing a System Restore I could revert my computer back to how it was yesterday, I clicked my way to where S R has always been only to discover that it it not there. (see attachment) (1) Am I completely off the wall in my expectation that SR will revert my computer to how it was yesterday [with RP present] or is that impossible now that RP has been un-installed? (2) Where can I find SR other than by going through Start-All Progs- Accessories-System Tools? Incidentally, when I tried to perform a SR last week it only progressed three quarters through the process and froze, which is the first time I have experienced this in 7 years. Any advice on the issue of RP & SR would be much appreciated. Yours hopefully Dave.

Re: Real Player

System Restore can also be activated through Start | Help and Support.

You should be able to download and install the free version of RealPlayer from Real.com: RealDownload Express

Re: Real Player

Thank you Hans, I downloaded Real Player but when I tried to install it the first element loaded 100% but on four occasions the second element stopped at about 60% and the installation ceased with a Zone alarm pop -up message saying an attempt was being made to access the net but some aspect of Active X was preventing the process completing. I have looked at the security settings via Tools but can't see any box relative to Active X to un-check. More assistance is needed I'm afraid.
By the way, can you offer any explanation why the definition System Restore has suddenly been replaced with that of System Information, as shown in the screen shot I sent? Regards again Dave.

Re: Real Player

Have you tried clicking the Allow button in the ZoneAlarm popup?

I don't know what happened to the System Restore menu item - did you turn off (disable) System Restore at some point?

Re: Real Player

Hi Hans, Regarding the question about whether I have canceled S R whilst it was running, I certainly have no recollection of having done that as I usually perform that process when leaving the computer to have a meal or the like and as for clicking the Allow button in Zone Alarm. Yes I have clicked it each time it appears but it simply disconnects from the web at the very instant. Can you offer any advice as to what to do to prevent the messages from appearing about my settings preventing Active X from running or that one of the publishers is blocked on the controls. Puzzled Dave.

Re: Real Player

I don't use ZoneAlarm myself, so I cannot help you with this. I hope that a fellow ZoneAlarm user will be able to tell you which setting(s) you should change.
