    can't fill down (Excel 2000)

I type a formula in E3 that is =2008-d3 where column d is year of birth and the result in col E would be age. The formula gives the correct value in E3, but I cannot fill down in column E. I tried holding down the left mouse button to f drag the formula but nothing happens. I've also tried holding down ctrl while holding left mouse button and have tried fill down in the edit menu. I also ran a 'detect and repair'. I had used this OK in the past, but about a month ago did a clean reinstall and hadn't tried that feature until now.

To fill down, you must place the mouse pointer over the little black square in the lower right corner of the cell (the mouse pointer will change shape), then click and drag.

Another option: select a range of cells in column E starting at E3, so that E3 is the active cell within the selection. Press F2 to edit the formula, then press Ctrl+Enter to copy the formula to all selected cells.
