    Help making a link work

    Hi All,

    I could use some help. I am the so-called webmaster for our Church's website, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and have managed to do okay so far. We are trying something new, giving our parishoners the option of making their donations online. This required a few new pages which I have put together and they seem to be working fine.

    Here is the hitch, we wanted to be able to set up a direct link, www.olmmparish.org/Giving, that would be referenced in our pledge forms. I set up the file and placed it at the root of the website but it doesn't work! What am I missing here?

    Any thoughts or suggestions from my friends here in the Lounge would be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry Mickey, have I missed something? What is the name of the file or is it a redirect you want?

    Re: Help making a link work

    Hi Jezza,

    I want to be able to have our Parishoners enter the web address www.olmmparish.org/Giving rather than have to go to our main web page and then click on the link to the that page. I created the page giving.html and placed it at the root of the web directory but the web address does not work.

    Thanks for looking at this for me,

    Sorry Mickey, whilst you were typing I worked out the problem,

    The URI is in fact

    http://www.olmmparish.org/Giving.htm

    You have missed off the l of html <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    I have linked to it and can now download the pdf file

    Re: Help making a link work

    So, if I got this correct, I need to have the '.htm' in the link as well in order to have it connect. That's all it was?!!! I can't believe that I didn't think of that one.

    Thanks for your help Jezza. I will redo the PDF to correct the link.

    Re: Help making a link work

    No problems Mickey, it suddenly dawned on me. The links in the website are all HTML apart from that one page. I personally would change the link in website throughout the pages to keep it consistant, slightly more work but just tidier (In my lowly opinion <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)

    Thanks Jezza,

    I think I have it all working now. I had to go in and edit my PDF document as well.

    Have a Choccy bar on me.

    Re: Help making a link work

    Mickey,

    Before I take my [choccy bar] there is a little problem that you need to deal with and that is
    with the javascript on the giving.html page!!

    The pledgeform function connected to the link Pledge Form has a line stating startTime(), as below

    <pre>function pledgeform(){

    win = window.open("Forms/PledgeForm.pdf", "newWin",
    "toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status= yes, menubar=no,
    scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,copyhistory=no,width= 640,height=480")
    startTime()
    }
    </pre>

    The startTime function only keeps the window open for 6 seconds, see below:

    <pre>function startTime(){

    var time= new Date();
    hours= time.getHours();
    mins= time.getMinutes();
    secs= time.getSeconds();
    closeTime=hours*3600+mins*60+secs;
    closeTime+=6; // Amount of time that the window stays open in seconds
    Timer();

    }</pre>

    If you are to use this function, I would write as so:

    <pre>function pledgeform(){

    win = window.open("Forms/PledgeForm.pdf", "newWin", "toolbar=no,
    location=no,directories=no,status=yes, menubar=no,scrollbars=yes,
    resizable=yes,copyhistory=no,width=640,height=480" )

    }
    </pre>

    In fact it may be an idea not to use it as your citizens may have pop
    up blockers on, just have it as standard HTML link and ask it to open in a new window

    Re: Help making a link work

    The easiest way to do this is to create a folder named Giving, and in that folder, have a page named index.html that redirects the user to the correct location. If your server supports ASP or PHP or another scripting language, you can create an index.asp or index.php that more directly transfer the user to the correct location.

    Here's an example of the first method: http://jeffersonscher.com/Maui07 (web page delivered to user; this is here because I reorganized the site)

    Here's an example of the second method: http://thailand.jeffersonscher.com/photos (browser instructed to redirect without displaying a page; this one is for security to prevent directory browsing)

    Re: Help making a link work

    Does using the second method, creating an index.asp, require that the new folder be created as well? Or do I create the index.asp file and leave it at the root directory with the index.html file?

    Thanks for noticing that Jezza,

    I will take care of that sometime today (we are having network printer problems today and everyone is in a tizzy).

    Yes, the idea is that the user is entering a URL that ends with a folder name, and the web server is going to serve the default page for that folder. (In some server setups, this page actually is named default.asp/php -- or other extension -- rather than index.asp/php.)
