    xp client to 2003 server

I have just setup a 2003 server using Microsoft's TechNet instructions for contoso.com with 10.0.0.2 as the server IP. However, when I try to use my xp client to join the domain, it keeps saying that the domain controller cannot be contacted. I can ping the server ip from my xp client. I cannot ping contoso.com from the xp client though.

    Any help is appreciated.

Re: xp client to 2003 server

    Hi there

    Just a couple of questions/points.

    1) Are your Service Packs up to date?
    2) This is sometimes a symptom of the client AV software being a bit over-zealous. Can you temporarily switch off your AV and see if you can connect?

Did you set up DNS in the server? Did you enter contoso.com in the client HOSTS file? How does your client PC know how to resolve contoso.com?

Re: xp client to 2003 server

I have just formatted a new hdd and installed WinXP Pro on it. It works just perfectly (to login to contoso.com) without any settings changed, except to join the domain in the Systems. I am using dhcp on this client and everything works just fine. However, on another PC, also using dhcp, it just would not talk to the domain controller.
