Which one? (Vista Hm Prem)

I would like to hear some thoughts on which one I should use? Avast!, PC-cillan, or AVG?

Whichever you like. IMO, there is not a big difference between most of the A/V products on the market. There has been a tendency for a long time for the vendors to try to get you to buy a suite of products. I think it is now just a matter of personal preference. If you have pruchased a PC with a security product on it for which there is a subscription for some period try it and see if you like it. Otherwise, pick one that suits you best. If it turns out you don't like it try another.

I agree with Joe.
AV products today, seem to be more a matter of personal choice. All seem to have their detractors or supporters.
Whatever works for you and is one you feel most at ease with, go for it.

Me? I'm an Avast! user and highly recommend it. It's free, unobtrusive, and updates itself daily.

Are you looking for an anti-virus-only product? For example, you might plan to run a free firewall like ZoneAlarm and a free anti-spyware product or two. Then the free products should work fine. In fact, commercial products sometimes want to uninstall the other ones to reduce support issues.

If you are looking for an integrated product, then the commercial suites have a lot to offer. As for your choice among them, there are significant differences in philosophy around the level of control the user wants or should want, especially in the firewall components. They also can change substantially from year to year, adding and subtracting features in different levels of their suites. Since they all offer 30 days trials, you could try quite a few and come to your own conclusions.

Well ccs,
I think I would rather have a product which prevents a virus from entering my system initially, rather than one that "normally removes viruses (most of the time) whenever they enter your system unexpectedly."

Can you be a little more specific about what your needs are ??? Are you satisfied with the firewall you use ??? Do you already use anti-malware programs like the free utilities SpywareBlaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware, etc. ???

Many users feel that commercial AV programs (Norton/Symantec, McAfee, etc) or the suites of programs that they bundle together can be intrusive and slow your system considerably and put together a good system of protection using only freeware programs. Your needs and personal preferences are important consideration in selecting what to use. HTH

Re: Which one? (Vista Hm Prem)

That's why I think Joe and Bob gave you good advice at the beginning of the thread. For example, I was a paid customer on the PC-Cillin product for several years. Never had a problem and it was unobtrusive and updated quite regularly. Just about two years ago when I bought this new computer and kept my old in the LAN for backup, I decided to try Avast so I wouldn't have to pay for two copies of PC-Cillin. Two years of good service from Avast also - no intrusions, daily updates and no slow down of my computer that I can see. BTW, I also used Avg back before the Trend Micro product.

So you can see the wisdom in what the guys said - they're all pretty good, just pick one and run with it.

If you are happy with PC-cillin and don't mind paying for it then I'd say to stay with what you know and are happy with. If you have a problem with the price or function, then you might look into one of the products like Avast or AVG. As Big Al said, they all offer excellent protection and it really is a matter of personal preference.
