    username.domain - why? (all)

For ages I have noticed that Documents and Settings on a shared domain-attached PC has a number of usernames like

Gladys, Mabel, Cynthia, Tristram, Nigel, Tarquin

and for some there is corresponding username with the suffix of the domain name (let's call it 'twohands' for badly-translated reasons!), so you will have

    Mabel.twohands, Tristram.twohands, Tarquin.twohands

Can anyone explain why this happens?
Is there any way of telling whether which directory structure will be used when (say) Tarquin logs on?
And is there any way to get rid of the data with the domain name suffix (plus, no doubt, a whole lot more Stuff in the registry)?
What is this phenomenon called (to aid further research!)?

    Thanks!

The user.domain folder is created when a domain user logs on to a PC (and into the domain) and the user name already exists. The user could be there from a workgroup or and old domain name. You can look at some of the folders and documents under tarquin and tarquin.twohands to see which is being updated.

In that case I can't explain why I've got "user" and "user.domain" being created within a space of about 20 minutes on a new Terminal Server!

I'd guess that some process it starting that is logging in automatically with different credentials than the user.
