Re: Problem with External Drive on FireWire

Does the Firewire port have any power saving settings? Is it being turned off when the PC hibernates?

Problem with External Drive on FireWire

I'm having a frustrating time with the Bride's WD1600JB 160Gb external hard drive, connected via FireWire, on an older Gateway. It fails to be recognized when restarting from hibernation or standby, and it seems like the only way to fix it is a whole bunch of shutting everything down, and restarting. The drive works fine on my XPMCE laptop.

In the Device driver list, it is called:
    WD____1600JB External IEEE SBP2 Device

    The driver in use is
Driver 5.1.2535.0 from Microsoft dated 7/1/2001

The device reports error code 10 after the restart fails, so I looked at <!mskb=943104>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 943104<!/mskb> and also found <!mskb=329909>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 329909<!/mskb>. According to the MSKB, the problem was supposed to be fixed in SP2, but this machine is SP2, and the problem persists. And I couldn't find Sbp2port.sys version 5.1.2600.1134 dated 23-Oct-2002 anyplace on the C: drive.

The problem is of recent origin, so I don't think IRQ conflicts are the problem, so moving the FireWire card to another slot is unlikely to help (but I'll try it). I also tried to update the FireWire card drivers, but the FireWire card reports itself as working correctly with the most recent drivers. I should also try a different cable. (Edit: can't be the cable, because it works fine after everything is shut down and restarted.)

I have Googled around quite a bit and have some additional things to try, but there are some great experts here, so ... any ideas?

That could be an issue - where would I find those settings?

Device Manager properties for the firewire port might have a power settings tab.

It has power-save and reawakening capabilities, but I don't see how to change them. Perhaps there are hardware dip switches. I may pull it and check the mfctrs website this weekend.

I was thinking more of the Power Management tab. Is there anything in Control Panel about Firewire settings?

Nothing in Control Panel | Power Options specific to the FireWire card, and nothing specific to the FireWire device under Control Panel, only the information under System | Hardware | Device Manager.

    Well, I hope the mfgrs site is of some help because I don't think I can be. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
