    zip code translate to State (MS Excel 2002 SP3)

    I was wondering if anyone out there had come across (or created) an excel file that would take a US Zip code and return the abbreviated state name?

    Ex.

    Enter -> 03842

    Result -> NH

    Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

    You should be able to download a zipcode file from the USPS (probably a text file or csv file) and import it into Excel. You can then use a lookup formula to find the state belonging to a zip code.

    There is a list at List of ZIP Codes in the United States that could be imported parsed and adapted.

    Thanks Steve,

    I actually found a good (translate - FREE) download on the PopularData website.

    Thanks Hans,

    I found the data with some Help from Steve and have my VLOOKUP formula working. Now I have another question, is there a way to make the file run in 'minimal' mode? By that I mean that I would like to be able to fire this up and have it sitting on my desktop ready to use with out having a whole big MS Excel window sitting there. Sort of like when I run WinAmp in mini-player mode. I am attaching a copy of the file for you to look at (ain't nothin' fancy).

    You can resize the Excel window to show only a few cells. But I'd probably find it just as easy to use Alt+Tab or the taskbar to switch between applications.

    Thanks Hans,

    I had tried the resizing and didn't find all that useful. I agree, Alt+Tab will do just fine. Thanks again for the help.
