    Footnotes & Mail Merge (2003)

I have created a mail merge letter document that is two pages long and contains two footnotes; footnote 1 is on page 1 and footnote 2 is on page 2. The recipient list is about 200 names. I did a test merge just to make sure I was doing this whole thing correctly, and, GASP!, the footnotes do not remain numbered 1 and 2 on each letter after the first one -- they continue to increase in number on each successive page/letter.

Is there a way to lock the footnotes so they remain numbered 1 (on page 1 of each letter) and 2 (on page 2 of each letter) on each successive letter after the first letter in the merge?

    Thanks

Instead of allowing Word to autonumber the footnotes you can use Custom marks, using 1 and 2 for your custom marks for these two footnotes.

    Try this:
    - Open or activate the merge document (the one with the merge fields).
    - Select Insert | Reference | Footnote.
    - Select "Restart each section" from the Numbering dropdown in the Format section of the dialog.
    - Click Apply (not Insert)
