Unlocker

Unlocker has been mentioned here a number of times in the past. I have used the old version (1.85) and the latest version (1.86).

What I have discovered across 2 WinXP /SP2 installs is that the application is not reliable or stable. When it pops up and I try to use it, I find that i get hundreds of event log records written to my System event log. This just happened, with most, if not all of my system events getting over-written. The reason I know this is that I use a program called EventSentry Lite to pump any new events to my email, so I am immediately aware of event errors. Unfortunately, few people look in event log on a regular basis, so few know what is going on in there.

I have had numerous contacts with the author of Unlocker via email. He claims not to be aware of the problem and in any case, didn't even know what the event log was (which I find strange for a developer). Even after documenting the problem and providing him information on what the Windows event log was, he did not know what to do.

My questions: Is anyone else here using this program? If so, would you look in your event logs (System log) to check for warning messages from unlocker when it next pops up? For me these messages occur when I ignore unlocker (don't let it take any actions), press the quit button and exit the prompt.

Do you have Unlocker set to autostart with Windows ?? If so, then you might try turning the autostart function off and using the right click option when you want to use the program.

Re: Unlocker

Been using Unlocker for some time across a few builds. Never had a problem with it or anything written to the Event Log.
Works like a champ for me. When I click on a file that supposedly can't be removed, it will pop up and offer to either move, rename or delete it for me.

Re: Unlocker

Th eproblem I have found is NOT when you let Unlocker act, it is when you deny it, by pressing the Quit botton. If anyone is brave enough, try it next time Unlocker pops up. Then look at the System event log and see if you get the problem I am referring to.

Why would you press the Quit button? There are cases where Unlocker will present a large number of processes that are holding a file, not just a single process. In these cases, you might not want to take a chance crashing the whole OS, so you want to skip allowing Unlocker to do anything.

Re: Unlocker

I deny Unlocker all the time. Never bothered to look at the Event Log, as it has never caused me a problem, other than the annoyance of clicking the Quit button. If I remember the next time it pops up, I'll check.

Re: Unlocker

I just tried to delete a system file and Unlocker offered to delete it.
I clicked Quit and stopped the process.

There was NO entry made in the Event Log.

Re: Unlocker

I just received an email form the author. He says he HAS been able to duplicate the problem and is working on a fix for the undetermined next release.

Well, that's good to know.
