Deleted Items Keep returning (Windows Mail v6)

I have several messages that will not display, nor will they delete. I found WMUtil (repair util), but that didn't change anything.

So then I went to C:UsersCWBillowAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows MailLocal Folders and, after copying all off to CD, deleted all the items from the inbox folder, figuring if nothing was there I could take another look.

WhenI started WMail up again, all the items were still there -- and that folder is still empty. so it's clear I don't have the right folder, or they are "re-generating".

How can I fix this?

Regards,
Chuck Billow

Try the following Chuck:

1) Back up the email you wish to keep
2) Close Windows Mail
3) Open Explorer
4) Go to C:UsersCWBillowAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Mail
5) Delete WindowsMail.MSMessageStore
6) Open the Backup directory
7) Open the new directory
8) Delete WindowsMail.MSMessageStore
9) Open Windows Mail to rebuild the mailstore database

That worked Jerry, thanks.

It sure seems like they've made a lot of things a lot harder in Vista... Maybe it's just me though.

Joe:

I was all for Switching to Windows Mail. I even had it all installed. Then I realized that it suffered form the same font issues I had discussed here <!post=Typeface Issues,[699,863>Typeface Issues<!/post> , so I had to go back to Windows Mail, which doesn't have this issue, strangely.

I have been running Windows Mail since day one and before (beta). I have NOT seen either of these issues that you seem to be having.

What kind of tweaking are you doing to this machine?

If this is anything like you do with your XP machines you are going to be in REAL deep dodo. I would quit reading all of those so called fixes, to make Vista better, when most do NOTHING but screw things up.

Now Dave,

Be nice.

I haven't actually done any tweaking yet. I'm just installing software. I'll admit.... I HAVE, SOMETIMES, tried a/some rather exploratory things. But, in fact, this was not one.

I was only importing my OE6 mail and going from there. I think that Vista's need to change something that wasn't even broken (Outlook Express) is rather the perfect case of tinkering and applying a fix that did nothing but cause trouble for the user.

And, again pparticularly in this case, if the program was so sound the why have things like WMUtil popped up?

As an aside, I ddon't think I ever had an issue with the OE database... maybe, but not that I readily recall.

Regards,
Chuck

Re: Deleted Items Keep returning (Windows Mail v6)

It is NOT just tweaking, but those older programs that you are installing that will mess things up and one does NOT know where these programs will make changes. These programs unless so stated by the OEM that they (the program and version) will run on Vista, should NOT even come near a Vista machine. I know during beta we do a lot of this type of testing, but I will burn a image before ANY install and will install one every couple of days to make sure things are working OK. I have more than once stepped back to a image, as NO install will UNDO ALL of the changes made to a system. Looking at the issues that you have posted in the Vista board, you are have more than anyones share of issues. It is time for you to go back to a clean sheet, and have another GOOD look at what you are doing.

Reading through a lot of different forums, MOST Vista issues are caused by old programs, old drivers, people making changes and do NOT know what they will do in Vista but worked in XP or even 98. BUT it is Vista that is having the problem.

I have NOT even heard about any of the issues you are having and there are a LOT of Vista machines out there. If I remember right, you bought a refurbished machine with Vista installed. So these issues may even be hardware related. You are even having issues with the "Standard" work around such as installing Firefox.

Re: Deleted Items Keep returning (Windows Mail v6)

Dave:

I'll give you three things:

1) The guys on the WOPR board have more than once saved my butt when I hadn't the foggiest what to do;
2) There are many times when I have caused my own issues by moving too fast, or too aggressively;
3) Vista is a horse of a fairly different color.

That all being said, I do think the following should also be taken into account:

1) The only way a person can do the type of testing and precautionary installations that you employ is to have various machines to utilize;
2) Many, if not most, people that upgrade an O/S do it "in the middle" as it were of anon-going life and use of the PC in question, and therefore often need access to programs that may (or not) be properly vetted;
3) MANY of the issues with Vista are in fact MS's rush to the market with a product that is/was hardly fully prepped, hence the lack of aavailability with hardware and drivers;

I'll surely admit that I should take a deep breath, and then research my issues a bit more before coming here. Most of the issues you listed would have been self-resolved if I had properly looked them up first (hence my ordering a book).

I am trying to be more conscious of the Vista issues and backing up more often.

I will try to do more of my own research. I plead guilty to an admiration of the amount of experience and talent on this board and the fact that the response received can often be something that would have taken oodles of time on my end to discover what was second-nature to one of the participants of the board.

I apologize for any bother I have caused anyone.

Regards,
Chuck Billow

It is not a WLM issue with the fonts. It is a system issue. You need to continue any font discussion in the thread you started about that subject.

Joe:

Now that I've correct the screen font issue, I'm looking again at Windows Live Mail.

Going at it from the back side:

Is there a reason I wouldn't switch to "Live" from "plain old" Windows Mail? 'Cause switching back and forth would be silly, but rrealizing iissue *after* the switch would be a bit much... even for a "tinkerer" like me!
